Deck Tech: BGW Birthing Pod

By

Hi all. I just want to share with you my latest version of the Birthing Pod archetype. It is quite obvious that I’ve been addicted in exploring the possibilities on the builds of this deck. The reason is that I need to know which kind of build is suited to defeat the delver decks.

So far, in terms of consistency, Red Green White or Naya has proven a fast start for the deck, though it still faces problems with the updated decklist of the Delver Blade. That’s why I decided to take on another color combination, the Green White Black.

Here is the initial list:

Lands
1 Evolving Wilds
4 Razorverge Thicket
3 Isolated Chapel
5 Forest
2 Plains
2 Swamp
2 Sunpetal Grove
3 Woodland Cemetery
1 Vault of the Archangel

Creatures
2 Blade Splicer
1 Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite
1 Sheoldred, Whispering One
1 Acidic Slime
3 Viridian Emissary
4 Birds of Paradise
1 Thrun, the Last Troll
2 Fiend Hunter
1 Bitterheart Witch
3 Strangleroot Geist
1 Geist-Honored Monk
1 Grave Titan
1 Sun Titan
2 Avacyn’s Pilgrim
1 Sylvok Replica
1 Skinrender
1 Sunblast Angel
1 Solemn Simulacrum
1 Phyrexian Metamorph

Spells
1 Curse of Death’s Hold
4 Birthing Pod
1 Gideon Jura
2 Oblivion Ring

As the looks of it, it still needed the right creature curve combination to maximize the Birthing Pod. I am still looking on other critters in black that is suited for the deck.

Suggestions are very most welcome. Just hit the comments below. Thanks for reading.

There is a good review of this deck in Naya on Magic Game Plan.

It’s really hard to scan through your list when you aren’t ordering your creatures by CMC.

On the subject of card choices, I think that Massacre Wurm is THE reason to play black, so I’m astonished that you don’t have it in your deck.

Most pod lists I’m seeing that have success at the moment are going from a 3/1 split of 6 and 7 drops down to a 2/1 split. Your build looks like it’s a little bit top heavy with two 7 drops. How about lowering the curve to increase your game against aggro?

Daybreak Ranger is poised for a breakout as a card vs Delver.

And I think that you want more powerful and impactful cards than Oblivion Ring. It’s never a bad card, but it’s no planeswalker or equivalent effect like Mortarpod or Mimic Vat.
