DOM Card Feature: Torgaar, Famine Incarnate

I have noticed from the recent card previews of the upcoming Dominaria set that Wizards is pushing for a Mono Color strategy which is a classic example during the early sets of Magic. They are printing creatures with Mono Color costs such as the 3-Drop 5/4 Elf Beast for GGG, a Flying 0/4 Djinn which power defends on the number of Basic Islands you control for UUU. I have yet to create another post for that one.

They will be also printing Avatar creatures like this one card preview below that I will discuss in this blog post. Presenting, Torgaar, Famine Incarnate.

The card really resembles Black’s nature of sacrificing minions for the glory of the master. In this case, we can have small weenie Black creatures that has value when sacrificed. For instance, check out Dire Fleet Hoarder. This creature gets you a Treasure token whenever it dies and so you can use the token for mana to be able to cast the avatar. Other options are Dread Wanderer and Scraphead Scrounger.

Torgaar’s etb ability can be beneficial in matchups that has lifegain ability like the token decks. Bringing them down to 10 life is already a huge factor even if you’ve already attacked for six-eight damage in your first two or three turns.

The deck build is composed of small weenies that can hit early and then later on can be your option for sacrifice. Here is an initial list:

3 Bone Picker
4 Dread Wanderer
3 Dire Fleet Hoarder
3 Glint-Sleeve Siphoner
4 Grasping Scoundrel
4 Night Market Lookout
4 Scrapheap Scrounger
4 Vicious Conquistador
4 Torgaar, Famine Incarnate

3 Fatal Push
2 Walk the Plank
2 Cast Down

4 Ifnir Deadlands
16 Swamp

I have considered to add majority of one-drops so as to lower the curve and to get Torgaar out as early as possible. Sure removal can be an easy solution for him as well as chump blockers but you also have to make sure of your other creatures that your opponents have to deal with.

That is a wrap. Let me know your thoughts of this deck build for Torgaar by commenting below. Thanks for reading and until the next post.
