Red Decks After Conflux: The Second-Degree Burn

Hey y’all, I’d like to say welcome again to my new blog and I hope you enjoy reading the posts on the new categories. I’ve decided to write a second part about my analysis of what red decks will look like after Conflux and here it goes. In Conflux we have three red cards which I think will have a place in the decks. To recap, the cards were Banefire, Volcanic Fallout and Hellspark Elemental. Here is my suggested decklist if you are going into the Mono Red version.

DDW (Mono red version)
*suggested decklist by Mark Ian Alloso
Maindeck(36)
4 Ashenmoor Gouger
4 Demigod of Revenge
4 Figure of Destiny
4 Hellspark Elemental
4 Mogg Fanatic
4 Stigma Lasher

4 Banefire
4 Flame Javelin
4 Incinerate

Land(24)
4 Ghitu Encampment
20 Mountain

The two cards replaced are the four copies of Boggart Ram-gang and Magma Spray/Puncture Blast. I may prefer to have Puncture Blasts in the sideboard for the Finks and Volcanic Fallout for the Faes and token decks (replacing Pyroclasm). My sideboard would look like this.

3 Everlasting Torment
4 Volcanic Fallout
3 Puncture Blasts
3 Manabarbs
2 Vithian Stinger

For the Black Red version, we can have Shambling Remains as a replacement for Ashenmoor Gouger or Boggart Ram Gang and Goblin Outlander for Stigma Lasher. The list would be like this.

Black Red DDW
*suggested decklist by Mark Ian Alloso
Maindeck (36)
4 Ashenmoor Gouger
4 Demigod of Revenge
4 Figure of Destiny
4 Goblin Outlander
4 Mogg Fanatic
4 Shambling Remains

2 Banefire
4 Flame Javelin
4 Incinerate
2 Puncture Blast

Land(24)
4 Auntie’s Hovel
4 Graven Cairns
2 Ghitu Encampment
2 Reflecting Pool
2 Sulfurous Springs
10 Mountain

The sideboard will have this list.

3 Everlasting Torment
2 Guttural Response
2 Manabarbs
4 Infest
2 Shriekmaw
2 Vithian Stinger

It may look random as most of them are just two copies but I prefer it to make the deck more flexible on a random metagame. I’d prefer having Manabarbs because I’ve noticed the deck is weak against 5 Color Control. I’m also thinking about Wild Ricochet but I think I’ll do a few test play on it first.

The third and the last decklist I’m going to present is the Black Red Blightning Beatdown. I’m guessing the deck will gain more popularity with the addition of Conflux. Here’s my list.

Black Red Blightning Beatdown
*suggested decklist by Mark Ian Alloso
Maindeck (35)
4 Demigod of Revenge
4 Figure of Destiny
4 Mogg Fanatic
4 Shambling Remains

3 Banefire
4 Bitterblossom
4 Blightning
4 Flame Javelin
4 Incinerate

Land (25)
4 Auntie’s Hovel
4 Graven Cairns
4 Reflecting Pool
4 Sulfurous Springs
3 Ghitu Encampment
6 Mountain

Sideboard (15)
4 Infest
4 Thoughtseize
4 Vithian Stinger
2 Loxodon Warhammer
1 Banefire

I based the sideboard on the top Blightning decks at Worlds 2008. I prefer Demigod over Siege-gang Commander for a faster clock and large damage and also it would provide a reach for Banefire.

So there you have it. I hope I have helped you in pondering ideas for a decklist. Stay tuned as I’ll be doing a report on the performance of Black Red DDW in our local tournament. Until next time…
