I know Vendetta’s going to be better early game, but you can afford to lose some life early on to make it up by wiping the board with Consume the Meek.

Late game, when bigger creatures are on the board, then Vendetta’s life loss becomes more worrisome and mana is less worrisome. There, Doom Blade will shine.
