Dimir Doomsday Excruciator emerged as one of the more cerebral strategies at Pro Tour Lorwyn Eclipsed, showcasing a control deck that wins through inevitability rather than speed. Built on disruption and recursion, the deck rewards precise play and deep format knowledge, making it a strong metagame call against both aggressive and midrange-heavy fields.

<ins class="adsbygoogle"
   style="display:inline-block;
	min-width:100px;
	max-width:970px;

   data-ad-client="ca-pub-2323336148464359"
   data-ad-slot="7353149719"></ins>

At the heart of the strategy is Doomsday Excruciator, a powerful finisher that compresses the game into a short, high-pressure window. Once resolved, it forces opponents, whether aggro or control archetypes, into an unfavorable race, especially when the Dimir player has already stabilized the board. This threat allows the deck to close games without committing multiple creatures to the battlefield.

The deck’s engine is supported by efficient interaction, such as Duress and the new card Deceit, which strip key answers and disrupt opposing game plans. Removal like Requiting Hex helps control early threats, while card advantage tools such as Insatiable Avarice ensure the deck keeps pace in longer games. Together, these cards create a flexible shell that adapts well to shifting board states.

A visual view of the decklist played by Christoffer Larsen.

Against aggressive decks, Dimir Doomsday Excruciator focuses on slowing the game down through discard and spot removal before turning the corner with its late-game threats. Stabilizing early is crucial, after which the deck’s superior card quality allows it to dominate the midgame and beyond.

In control matchups, the deck shines through patience and resource management. By trading efficiently and presenting a must-answer finisher in Doomsday Excruciator, Dimir gains inevitability. Its Pro Tour showing confirms that disciplined control strategies remain a viable and dangerous force in the Lorwyn Eclipsed Standard format.

Overall, Dimir Doomsday Excruciator stands out as proof that methodical, high-skill control decks still have a place in Lorwyn Eclipsed Standard. Its ability to dismantle opposing strategies through discard, removal, and a single overwhelming finisher makes it both resilient and punishing in the hands of experienced pilots. As the Pro Tour meta continues to evolve, this deck is poised to remain a strong contender for players who value precision, patience, and inevitability.

Thanks for reading.

From a judge’s perspective, a well-written and properly prepared decklist in Magic: The Gathering is more than just a formality—it’s a vital part of tournament integrity and player organization. A clear and accurate list ensures fair play, prevents confusion, and helps avoid unnecessary penalties or disputes during events.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display:inline-block;
	min-width:100px;
	max-width:970px;
	width:100%;
	height:200px" data-ad-client="ca-pub-2323336148464359" data-ad-slot="7353149719"></ins>

Whether a player is submitting a decklist for a local Friday Night Magic or a high-level competitive tournament, the same principles apply: the list must be precise, readable, and consistent from start to finish.

First and foremost, accuracy is everything. Every card on your list must be clearly identifiable by its full English name, and you must specify the exact number of copies you’re playing. Abbreviations, nicknames, or partial names (like “Bolt” for Lightning Bolt) can lead to confusion and possible penalties if the intent isn’t clear. If a card has multiple printings or versions, always use the official card name without worrying about the set code or collector number—unless the tournament specifically requires it for special formats. Double-check that your main deck and sideboard match the tournament’s rules for size and composition—usually 60 cards minimum in the main deck and up to 15 in the sideboard.

Second, organization and legibility matter just as much as accuracy. Tournament staff and judges must be able to read your list quickly and without ambiguity. Write or type neatly, group cards by type (creature, instant, sorcery, etc.), and list them alphabetically within each category if possible. This not only makes it easier for judges to verify but also helps you spot errors when cross-checking. Avoid crossing out or rewriting cards on the same line—if you make a mistake, start a new list or a new section. Clean formatting can prevent disputes later if a judge needs to confirm what you intended to play.

Third, always verify your deck against your list before the event begins. Physically sort your cards and match them line by line with the decklist. It’s common for players to accidentally register the wrong card count, forget a sideboard card, or write down the wrong version of a land. A single mismatch between your deck and your submitted list can lead to game losses or disqualifications in competitive events. Take five extra minutes to confirm every detail; it’s time well spent.

Sorting my Prerelease Sealed deck by color and mana cost.

Finally, keep a personal copy of your decklist and treat it as a living document. This helps you make consistent changes between tournaments and track what versions or sideboard plans you’ve tried. Whether you maintain it digitally or on paper, a good decklist is both a record and a tool for improvement. By following these best practices—accuracy, legibility, verification, and documentation—you not only uphold tournament integrity but also build stronger habits as a competitive player.

A decklist isn’t just paperwork—it’s a reflection of your precision, discipline, and respect for the game. Thanks for reading.

Standard has seen its fair share of powerful combo decks, but few feel as game-breaking as casting spells for free. Simic Omniscience takes this concept to the extreme, using ramp, draw, and protection to set up one of the most explosive finishers in the format.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display:inline-block;
	min-width:100px;
	max-width:970px;
	width:100%;
	height:200px" data-ad-client="ca-pub-2323336148464359" data-ad-slot="7353149719"></ins>

Once the namesake enchantment hits the battlefield, the deck unleashes an unstoppable cascade of threats and value, turning even the most grindy matchups into overwhelming victories.

This deck centers on getting Omniscience onto the battlefield, which lets you cast spells from your hand for free and enables explosive turns. To support that, it runs a suite of ramp and draw spells (like Consult the Star Charts) to accelerate your mana and dig through your deck toward key pieces. It also includes interaction and protection, allowing you to survive long enough to assemble the combo.

Once Omniscience is in play, the deck attempts to chain together powerful spells and threats — in particular, the enchantment Roiling Dragonstorm works well as a win-con by triggering a cascade of effects. The deck also leverages creatures like Marang River Regent and Kona, Rescue Beastie to press advantage or provide incremental value.

Because this strategy is vulnerable to disruption (counterspells, hand disruption, removal), the deck runs protection & interaction in the form of Dispelling Exhale, Lost in the Maze, and Unauthorized Exit to buy time and maintain board presence. The goal is to survive the early and mid-game, assemble Omniscience, and then snowball by casting free spells to take over the game.

You check the full decklist and sideboard here: Simic Omniscience Deck for Magic: the Gathering

Against aggressive decks, the Simic Omniscience strategy focuses on survival and stabilization. Cheap interaction like Lost in the Maze and Unauthorized Exit helps delay early pressure, while blockers such as Kona, Rescue Beastie provide both defense and can cheat the enchantment later on. The goal is to buy enough time to resolve Omniscience into your board, where the deck’s raw card advantage and free spells can completely outscale the opponent’s tempo. Once stabilized, you can overwhelm aggro decks with repeated value and finish them off with the chain of Marang River Regents’ ETB ability.

Against control and midrange, the plan shifts toward resilience and inevitability. The deck carefully deploys threats to bait removal and counterspells while leaning on card draw to keep the hand full. Key spells are protected with Dispelling Exhale, allowing Omniscience or your win conditions to stick when it matters most. In longer games, the ability to cast spells for free ensures you’ll eventually outlast the opponent’s resources, making patience and timing critical to breaking through control-heavy matchups.

Simic Omniscience isn’t just about winning—it’s about creating a spectacle every time the deck goes off. With careful play, patient sequencing, and the right mix of protection, the deck can dismantle aggro swarms and outlast control’s answers before dropping its signature enchantment to dominate the game. For players who love high-risk, high-reward strategies that explode with flair, this deck offers a truly unforgettable Standard experience.

The Magic: the Gathering Orzhov Aggro has emerged as one of the most compelling archetypes in the current Standard metagame, and it snagged a strong #2 finish in a recent MTGO League event. Let us discuss further how this deck build can become a good choice in the current Standard full of Vivi and Mono-Red decks.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display:inline-block;
	min-width:100px;
	max-width:970px;
	width:100%;
	height:200px" data-ad-client="ca-pub-2323336148464359" data-ad-slot="7353149719"></ins>

With a low-to-the-ground creature suite—featuring four copies each of Cosmogrand Zenith, Elegy Acolyte, Nurturing Pixie, and Sunpearl Kirin—the deck ramps early board presence with efficiency and resilience. These creature threats are backed by a flexible spell package, including removal, disruption, and surprising reach, all wrapped in easy-to-trigger synergy that avoids overextension.

What makes this build especially intriguing is how it leverages both tempo plays and value engines with minimal fluff. Cards like Momentum Breaker and Nowhere to Run keep the pressure continuous, while Seam Rip and Tinybones Joins Up provide reach and adaptability when needed. Plus, the inclusion of Elspeth, Storm Slayer gives a powerful mid-to-late-game edge, reminding opponents that Orzhov isn’t just fast—it also knows how to close the game decisively.

Check out the full decklist and sideboard cards below.

A total of 349 Standard decklists were submitted for the Magic: the Gathering Pro Tour Aetherdrift event this weekend, but a few truly stand out. The most exciting ones feature creative card synergies, introduce a fresh archetype, or pull off an unexpected strategy that catches everyone by surprise.

Today’s blog article features one of these spicy Standard deck builds and it is called Esper Paragon by Jason Ye. Check out the decklist below as I explain the deck’s main strategy.

First of all, what does the creature Serra Paragon do?

The second ability shines as to the various card advantages that it can do, making your graveyard sort of your extra hand of cards and spells. Overlord makes sure that it can be filled as early as turn two, and later on, can become a threat itself.

The initial list looks to be similar to that of the Esper Pixie deck, even having a playset copy of the card. Bouncing various cards with ETB effects such as Helpful Hunter to draw cards, and Momentum Breaker to ‘edict’ opponents are your main strategy options early on. It gets more spicier with Scrollshift to blink them out for more value. Late-game scenarios will surely be dominated by this deck.

Overextending aggro can be punished by Day of Judgment and Lockdown, and Pest Control in the sideboard. It is also open to the variance of discard spells against control and other midrange decks, and graveyard hate only for opponents.

As of this posting, the deck played by Jason Ye qualified for the Day 2 of the Pro Tour and I hope to see a featured match coverage tomorrow. If it can perform pretty well at that time, I can say that this deck will see followers on future Standard tournaments after this weekend.

That’s pretty much it for now for this spicy Standard deck feature. Thank you for reading and until the next blog post.

The Mono Blue Flyers deck is a classic archetype in Magic: The Gathering (MTG) that leverages the power of evasive creatures—specifically those with flying—combined with blue’s signature control elements. This throwback deck harkens to a time when simplicity in strategy and synergy in card design made for both effective and enjoyable gameplay.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display:inline-block;
	min-width:100px;
	max-width:970px;
	width:100%;
	height:200px" data-ad-client="ca-pub-2323336148464359" data-ad-slot="7353149719"></ins>

Here below is an example deck list of the deck build:

Creatures (16):
4x Serendib Efreet
4x Faerie Squadron
4x Cloud Djinn
4x Spiketail Hatchling

Spells (20):
4x Counterspell
4x Mana Leak
4x Boomerang
4x Unsummon
4x Brainstorm

Artifacts (2):
2x Scroll Rack

Lands (22):

18x Island
4x Faerie Conclave

Let’s dive into this nostalgic deck’s key components, strategies, and appeal.

1. Core Strategy

Evasion with Flying: The primary strategy of the Mono Blue Flyers deck is to dominate the battlefield with flying creatures. Flying is a powerful evasion ability that makes creatures difficult to block, allowing consistent damage to be dealt to the opponent. This deck often aims to whittle down the opponent’s life total over several turns using creatures that can soar over most defenses.

Control Elements: As with many blue decks, control plays a critical role in Mono Blue Flyers. Counterspells, bounce effects, and card draws are integral to maintaining board dominance and ensuring that the opponent’s threats are kept in check.

2. Key Creatures

Serendib Efreet: A staple in early Mono Blue Flyers decks, Serendib Efreet is a 3/4 flyer for three mana that offers both power and evasion, though it does come with a minor drawback of dealing damage to its controller.

Faerie Squadron: Another efficient flyer, Faerie Squadron, provides flexibility. It can be played early as a 1/1 flyer or later in the game as a 3/3, depending on the player’s needs.

Cloud Djinn: A potent finisher, Cloud Djinn is a 5/4 flyer that requires a bit more mana but delivers a significant punch when it hits the battlefield.

3. Control Spells

Counterspell: The iconic blue spell, Counterspell, is an auto-include. It allows the player to negate any threat the opponent tries to resolve, keeping the skies clear for their flyers.

Boomerang: A versatile bounce spell, Boomerang can be used to return any permanent to its owner’s hand, disrupting the opponent’s strategy or clearing a path for your flyers to attack.

Unsummon: A more specialized bounce spell, Unsummon is particularly effective at removing blockers or resetting an opponent’s tempo.

4. Card Draw and Advantage

Brainstorm: One of the most efficient card draw spells, Brainstorm, allows you to dig through your deck quickly and set up future draws.

Impulse: Another great card for digging deeper into the deck, Impulse lets you look at the top four cards and choose the one that best fits your current needs.

5. Land Base

Islands: As a mono-colored deck, the land base is straightforward. Islands are the sole mana source, providing the blue mana needed to cast your spells. The simplicity of the mana base ensures consistency in drawing the necessary mana.

Faerie Conclave: This land can become a 2/1 flying creature, adding another threat to the board while also contributing mana when needed.

6. Playing the Deck

Early Game: In the early game, you’ll want to establish a board presence with smaller flyers like Faerie Squadron and protect them with counterspells. Drawing cards to keep your hand full of options is crucial.

Mid to Late Game: As the game progresses, bring out heavy hitters like Serendib Efreet and Cloud Djinn. Use your control spells to clear the way and keep the pressure on your opponent. The goal is to chip away at their life total steadily while maintaining board control.

Winning the Game: The deck wins through sustained damage from flying creatures that are difficult for opponents to deal with due to their evasion and the protective control spells in your hand.

7. Nostalgia and Appeal

Timelessness: The Mono Blue Flyers deck is a timeless archetype that has seen iterations in various formats and across different MTG eras. It embodies the classic blue strategy of control mixed with efficient, evasive threats.

Simplicity and Effectiveness: This deck appeals to both new and veteran players for its straightforward game plan and effectiveness. It showcases the elegance of older MTG design philosophies where synergy and strategy are paramount.

Collectibility: For those who played MTG during its early years, this deck is a throwback to simpler times. Collecting and playing with these older cards brings back fond memories of kitchen table games and local tournaments.

8. Conclusion

The Mono Blue Flyers deck remains a beloved part of Magic: The Gathering’s history. Its combination of flying creatures and control elements creates a balanced, engaging gameplay experience that highlights the strengths of the blue color. Whether you’re a longtime player looking to revisit the past or a newer player interested in exploring MTG’s roots, Mono Blue Flyers offers a satisfying and nostalgic deck choice.

Yes, the blog article title says so. The main sponsor that made the deck possible again is the recent Magic: the Gathering set released, Outlaws in Thunder Junction. The new set’s Big Score subset got a few reprints of relevant cards such as the Grand Abolisher which is very huge and powerful. I remembered the first time I made a deck with the card in the Selesnya (Green/White) colors and it performed well against the top-tier decks in the Standard format back in the day.

In the current deck build setup, the Mono White aggro shell is still a viable setup for the new cards to fit. Another relevant reprint is the Archangel of Tithes which is also suited for the deck strategy plan that I have thought of. I made the decklist on the Archidekt website and also came up with the deck discussion video to detail each card’s choices. Do take note that this is just the initial version and possible changes can happen.

Recalling my first time encountering the Magic: the Gathering TCG vice err hobby, I started playing in Urza’s Destiny expansion as the recently released set. I think that was way back in 1999 during my fourth year in high school. A classmate introduced me to it and let me borrow decks to try and get familiarized with the gameplay.

<ins class="adsbygoogle"
   style="display:inline-block;
	min-width:100px;
	max-width:970px;
	width:100%;

   data-ad-client="ca-pub-2323336148464359"
   data-ad-slot="7353149719"></ins>

At that time, I only knew that winning the game was by attacking with creatures. Hence, my first deck was a Red Green Aggro deck. It was composed of cards I bought from the local hobby card shop located in Marymart Mall and a mix of cards from an Urza’s Saga Preconstructed deck. It was Urza block at that time so Echo creatures were pretty popular.

The deck’s creature lineup was Viashinos, Goblins, Simian Apes, Pouncing Jaguars, and spells such as Giant Growths, and Rancors to get ahead of the damage. The finishing touch was a burn to the dome with spells like Shock and Arc Lightning, which can also act as creature removal of the opponent. It was funny as I was enjoying its gameplay that I wanted it as my deck for the local Magic: the Gathering tournament.

Here below is what I think that deck would look like. I could not afford to buy Rares at that time and only had a few Uncommons that were already available:

Lands
10 Forest
10 Mountain

Creatures
4 Pouncing Jaguar
4 Goblin Patrol
4 Goblin War Buggy
4 Viashino Sandscout
2 Viashino Cutthroat
2 Simian Grunts
2 Goblin Berserker

Spells
3 Arc Lightning
4 Giant Growth
4 Rancor
4 Shock
2 Symbiosis
1 Jagged Lightning

When the latest version of the Quintorius in his planeswalker form was released in the Lost Caverns of Ixalan set, I got pretty excited about the deck strategy that will come out of it for the Standard format. With new components going with the deck list, I expected it to be a new deck candidate for the top-tier category.

It turned out to be not what I deemed it to be as it was not that efficient and powerful enough to compete with the other decks in the metagame at that time. However, I did not lose hope.

I was happy to see a familiar deck build when browsing through the recent Standard decklist posted per event at the MTG Top 8 website. It got a good finish in the tournament, and the deck build splashed a third color, Green, to open access to Questing Druid. I think this is a good setup as the deck needs an additional threat under the two-drop slot whilst also providing card advantage.

Today’s blog post of certain deck gameplay in the Murders at Karlov Manor Standard format shows the combination of the control deck shell and a reanimation splash. That deck is the Rakdos Discover build which caters to the “Discover” Mechanic from Lost Caverns of Ixalan.

The deck can process to curve out pretty well from its two-drop and three-drop creatures while also going well with efficient spot removals against opponents’ creatures. The top curve Trumpeting Carnosaur provides a good card advantage with Discover 5 and has a 7/6 Trampling body.

The deck’s sideboard plan also works against most of the archetypes in the Standard format, which you can also see in the sideboard games in the video below.

Check them out, and don’t forget to like and subscribe to the channel.

A “Domain Aggro” deck in Pauper refers to a deck that utilizes the domain mechanic and aggressive strategies. In Pauper, you are limited to using common rarity cards, making it a budget-friendly format. The domain mechanic cares about the number of basic land types you control, specifically Plains, Island, Swamp, Mountain, and Forest.

<ins class="adsbygoogle"
   style="display:inline-block;
	min-width:100px;
	max-width:970px;
	width:100%;
	height:200px"
   data-ad-client="ca-pub-2323336148464359"
   data-ad-slot="7353149719"></ins>

The more basic land types you control, the more powerful the domain cards become. Here’s a general idea of how a Domain Aggro Pauper deck works to its advantage:

Land Base: You’ll want to include cards that help you control the basic land types. Cards like [[Evolving Wilds]], [[Terramorphic Expanse]], and [[Ash Barrens]] are used to fetch specific basic land types.

Domain Cards: The deck includes cards that benefit from having multiple basic land types in play. These cards often become more powerful the more types you have. For example, [[Matca Rioters]] or [[Nacatl Hunt-Pride]] can get bigger as you gain more basic land types. Other cards may provide various effects based on the number of basic land types, such as [[Karoo]] lands.

Aggressive Creatures: Pauper Domain Aggro decks typically include aggressive creatures that can apply pressure on your opponent. Cards like [[Kird Ape]], [[Wild Nacatl]], or efficient creatures with power/toughness relative to the number of basic land types can be quite effective.

Combat Tricks: You might include combat tricks like [[Giant Growth]] or instant-speed removal to protect your creatures or clear the way for attacks.

Sideboard: A well-constructed sideboard is essential to adapt to different matchups in the Pauper format. It should include cards that help you deal with a variety of threats and strategies especially color-specific hoser spells.

Card Advantage: Consider including cards that provide card advantage, such as Nylea’s Presence and Shadow Prophecy, for each basic land type among the lands you control.

You can check a recent Domain Aggro Pauper deck tech here on this video below.

Please note that the metagame and card availability in the Pauper format can change, so it’s important to keep up with the latest developments in the format and adjust your deck accordingly. Also, Pauper allows for a wide variety of strategies, so you can tailor your Domain Aggro deck to your personal playstyle and the metagame you’re encountering.

The deck name is Cyclone Surge, and it is a Magic: the Gathering deck built around the Cycling mechanic. Cycling is a versatile ability that allows you to pay a certain cost to discard a card from your hand and draw a new card. This deck focuses on exploiting the Cycling mechanic to create a fluid and adaptive playstyle, enabling you to dig through your deck quickly, find answers to various situations, and maintain a steady flow of resources.

<ins class="adsbygoogle"
   style="display:inline-block;

In the past, we had several relevant deck builds that gained an advantage from cycling and one of which was during the Onslaught set. The deck was Red-White Astral Slide and became a contender deck in that time of the Standard format.

Main Mechanics:

Cycling: The heart of this deck is the Cycling ability. Most cards in the deck will have Cycling, allowing you to cycle them away when they’re not immediately useful, ensuring you never get stuck with dead cards in your hand.

Payoffs for Cycling: Many cards in the Cyclone Surge deck will provide additional benefits when you cycle them. These could include drawing extra cards, dealing damage to opponents, gaining life, or other advantageous effects.

Key Cards:

Archfiend of Ifnir: This card rewards you for cycling by placing -1/-1 counters on creatures your opponents control. This can significantly weaken their board while you continue to cycle through your deck.

Drake Haven: This enchantment rewards you with 2/2 flying Drake creature tokens whenever you cycle a card. It helps you build a board presence while cycling through your deck.

Flourishing Fox: A creature that gets a +1/+1 counter whenever you cycle a card. It starts small but can quickly grow into a formidable threat.

Shark Typhoon: This enchantment lets you cycle cards to create a 5/5 Shark creature token with flying. It also has the added bonus of giving you a versatile spell that can be cast for its cycling cost.

Zenith Flare: A powerful finisher that deals X damage to any target, where X is the number of cards Cycling in your graveyard. It rewards you for cycling and can potentially close out the game.

Decklist:

Creatures (18):

4x Flourishing Fox

4x Archfiend of Ifnir

3x Gempalm Polluter

3x Vile Manifestation

3x Nimble Obstructionist

Spells (18):

4x Boon of the Wish-Giver

4x Censor

4x Zenith Flare

3x Startling Development

2x Valiant Rescuer

Enchantments (4):

4x Drake Haven

2x Shark Typhoon

Lands (20):

4x Irrigated Farmland

4x Canyon Slough

4x Desert of the Mindful

4x Sheltered Thicket

4x Island

<ins class="adsbygoogle"
     style="display:inline-block;width:300px;height:250px"
     data-ad-client="ca-pub-2323336148464359"
     data-ad-slot="1416605407"></ins>

Playstyle:

The Cyclone Surge deck focuses on a dynamic play style. You want to cycle aggressively to dig through your deck, find your key pieces, and gain incremental advantages. Use cards like Flourishing Fox and Archfiend of Ifnir to apply pressure while disrupting your opponent’s plans. Drake Haven and Shark Typhoon help you build a board presence and generate flying threats.

Save your Zenith Flares for the right moment, whether it’s to finish off an opponent or remove a critical threat. Keep an eye on your graveyard to maximize the damage from Zenith Flare. Additionally, utilize cards like Censor to disrupt your opponents’ plays and maintain control of the game.

Remember that adaptability is key with this deck. You have the flexibility to cycle away cards that don’t suit the current situation and draw into answers that can turn the tide of the game in your favor.

Overall, the Cyclone Surge deck is all about embracing the Cycling mechanic to its fullest, maintaining a steady stream of card advantage, and outmaneuvering your opponents with versatile plays.
