Magic: The Gathering (MTG) is a popular collectible card game that has captivated millions of players worldwide. For new players, getting started can seem daunting due to the vast array of cards and strategies. However, joining a prerelease event can be a perfect way to begin your MTG journey. In this post, we will explore what a prerelease event is, how it can help you start your collection, and provide tips to ensure you have a great experience.

What is a Prerelease?

A prerelease event is a special occasion where players get the opportunity to play with new cards from an upcoming MTG set before it is officially released. These events are held at local game stores and are designed to provide a fun and casual environment for both new and experienced players.

During a prerelease, players receive a prerelease kit that contains a selection of booster packs from the new set, a special promo card, and other materials to help build a deck. The event typically includes a series of matches where players can test their new decks and win additional prizes.

Benefits of attending a prerelease:

Early access to new cards

Opportunity to meet and interact with other players

Learning experience in a friendly environment

Chance to win prizes and expand your collection

Getting Started at a Prerelease Event

Joining a prerelease event is simple and straightforward. Here are the steps to get started:

Register for the event: Sign up at your local game store or online. It’s a good idea to register early as spots can fill up quickly.

What to bring: Bring basic supplies such as sleeves, a deck box, and a life counter. Some stores may provide these, but it’s best to come prepared.

Understand the basic rules and format: Familiarize yourself with the Sealed Deck format used in prerelease events. You’ll build a 40-card deck from the contents of your prerelease kit.

Building Your Collection at a Prerelease

One of the main advantages of participating in a prerelease is the opportunity to start or expand your MTG collection. Here’s how:

Prerelease kit contents: Each kit includes six booster packs from the new set, one promo card, and a spindown life counter. These items form the foundation of your collection.

Using promo cards and booster packs: The promo card is a unique addition to your collection, and the booster packs provide a variety of cards to build your deck and trade with others.

Trading and community interaction: Prereleases are social events. Engage with other players, trade cards, and build connections within the MTG community.

Tips for New Players

To make the most of your prerelease experience, consider the following tips:

Learn from experienced players: Don’t hesitate to ask for advice and watch how seasoned players build their decks and play.

Participate in side events: Many prerelease events offer additional activities like casual games and mini-tournaments, which are great for learning and having fun.

Post-event actions: After the event, organize your new cards and explore other MTG formats like Standard, Draft, or Commander to continue building your collection and skills.

I am hoping that this weekend’s scheduled Theros Beyond Death Prerelease will be held with no delays whatsoever. Why am I saying this? That is because of the recent disaster that struck the country last Sunday, the eruption of the Taal volcano. The local and international flights were canceled that night as the airport was within the range of the ashfall. It was sudden and unexpected but I am hoping that all of those affected can safely evacuate and be taken care of by the concerned agencies. Our local prerelease is scheduled this Friday evening and Saturday afternoon.

<ins class="adsbygoogle"
 style="display:inline-block;
	min-width:100px;
	max-width:970px;
	width:100%;
	height:150px"
 data-ad-client="ca-pub-2323336148464359"
 data-ad-slot="7353149719"></ins>

As for those who plan to go to their local prerelease, there are a few things of note, especially to the first-timers.

Read about the new cards.The Theros Beyond Death full spoiler has been published since last Friday and the players got a chance to read through each card in the set, getting familiar with each ability and mechanic, and knowing which ones are doable to use in their decks.

Prepare card sleeves, containers, and dices. It is better to prepare these materials beforehand so that you can protect the cards you’ve opened as well as for easy shuffling and life tracking uses.

Do not be afraid to ask questions. whether it is the game rules or combat scenario, people are there to answer your inquiry, especially your local MTG judge. They are accommodating to get you to know more about the gameplay, how card interactions can turn out, and also to avoid card misinterpretations.

Stay refreshed. That is, bring water and snacks if your local game store does not have them. Bring energy drinks if you have to. A typical prerelease can last about five to six hours with deck construction and four rounds of gameplay. Do not forget to eat your lunch if the schedule is in the early afternoon.

Have fun. Enjoy each moment of the prerelease starting from deck construction up until the last match of the last round. Playing to win might be your main goal but the learning experience is still the basic benefit of joining this event.

Enjoy your Theros Beyond Death prerelease guys.
