After four days, three formats of intense Magic competition in Worlds 2011, Jun’ya Iyanaga and Team Japan dominated the individual Worlds 2011 Champion and Team Worlds Champion respectively. Iyanaga’s Wolf Run Ramp version worked successfully with the aggro-expected Metagame popularized by the Token Town, UW Humans and Team Fireball’s innovative build of Tempered Steel Aggro.

The top 8 showcased literally four Tempered Steel, piloted by powerhouse pros Luis Scott-Vargas, Paulo Vitor Damo da Rosa, Josh Utter-Leyton and the winner streak Conley Woods. Other decks are the Mono White Humans by Craig Wescoe, Mono Red by David Caplan, and GW Tokens by Richard Bland. It was a meta call for Tempered Steel but unfortunately lost their touch as the first three got eliminated in the quarters and Woods on the semis, losing to Iyanaga. Good thing though is that the losses locked up their teammate, Owen Turtenwald Player of the Year title for 2011.

Here is Iyanaga’s winning deck list:

Wolf Run Ramp by Jun’ya Iyanaga
Maindeck
1 Birds of Paradise
4 Inferno Titan
4 Primeval Titan
4 Solemn Simulacrum
1 Thrun, the Last Troll

2 Devil’s Play
4 Galvanic Blast
2 Green Sun’s Zenith
4 Rampant Growth
1 Shock
3 Slagstorm
4 Sphere of the Suns

4 Copperline Gorge
5 Forest
4 Inkmoth Nexus
3 Kessig Wolf Run
6 Mountain
4 Rootbound Crag

Sideboard
2 Ancient Grudge
4 Autumn’s Veil
1 Beast Within
1 Slagstorm
2 Sword of Feast and Famine
2 Thrun, the Last Troll
2 Tree of Redemption
1 Viridian Corrupter

Also, here is the video of the final match between Iyanaga and Bland.

The culminating and the biggest event on this Magic Year will happen this weekend. The most awaited 2011 Magic: The Gathering Worlds Championships to be held in San Francisco, California is the gathering of player from more than 50 countries, qualified via Nationals, on Pro Tour or via DCI rankings.

The event coverage starts November 17 until the 20th, that’s four days of Magic play goodies for you. I am hoping Team Pilipinas will do good this year, a Top 8 appearance perhaps? Don’t waste the chance for glory guys, good luck!

Yes and No. Yes, it is the ‘world’s famous card game’ inspired movie and no, it is not about the Magic storyline of epic battles and Planeswalkers duels but it is about the story of friendship in the Magic: the Gathering scene. The title is Tap: Max’s Game.

According to its website, the Czech independent film is a sports drama of five friends after their Magic club disbanded and their playing careers finished.

This is actually my second time qualifying for this event (the first one was way back in 2003) and the first time I’m actually going there. I’m quite happy because Iloilo’s attendance for this year, as compared to the previous years, is fairly high with seven players qualified.

The Nationals has two formats, Standard Constructed and Draft. The team’s practice for the draft I think is not enough as I still commit errors in choosing the right picks. As for the Standard, I’ve decided to pilot the same deck archetype I used on GP Singapore: the Black Red Vampires.

Despite the popularity and success of Cawblade in the recent SCG 5k and the recent US Nationals, I still don’t think my mindset is prepared to pilot the deck. I tried playtests on a personal list a few weeks back, but the shifting of the metagame and the limited time has forced me to discard that archetype.

Going back, here is my latest list and probably the final one for the maindeck:

BR Vamps as of 8/9/2011
by Mark Ian Alloso

Lands
2 Verdant Catacombs
2 Marsh Flats
4 Lavaclaw Reaches
4 Dragonskull Summit
4 Blackcleave Cliffs
7 Swamp

Creatures
4 Bloodghast
4 Gatekeeper of Malakir
4 Kalastria Highborn
4 Vampire Lacerator
4 Pulse Tracker
2 Vampire Hexmage
3 Hero of Oxid Ridge

Spells
4 Lightning Bolt
2 Go for the Throat
1 Dismember
2 Doom Blade
3 Arc Trail

The sideboard will similarly look like this:
2 Act of Aggression
1 Arc Trail
1 Doomblade
4 Duress
2 Manic Vandal
1 Shatter
2 Sorin’s Thirst
2 Vampire Nighthawk

I’m still looking for options in solving the Cawblade matchup, as the Time Reinforcements are a tough advantage to deal with. Though I think the three artifact destructions are enough, I’m still checking in on what the ins and outs of the deck for the matchup will look like.

The matchups I’m currently concerned about, in order of priority are:
1. Cawblade
2. Blue Black Control
3. Blue Red Twin
4. Red Deck Wins
5. Birthing Pod Variations
6. Mirror match

They say Blue Black is a good matchup, but the early discards via Inquisitions are the weakness of the deck. Also, racing against Red burn is somewhat 50/50 and would depend really on the draws (at most, avoid mana flood).

My other card choices for the sideboard are:

Inquisitions of Kozilek – I think of it as a substitute for Duress, but the card yearns to be in the main and I don’t like drawing discards in the late game.

Cunning Sparkmage – This is specifically to deal with the hawks and the soldier tokens from the reinforcements. Its use though is very limited.

Vampire Outcasts – Don’t laugh. This is influenced after I read an article regarding the M12 Event Decks and it is pretty cool to cast this one against RDW. Yes, that’s Magic Christmas Land you might say.

We might run a few gauntlet matchups to test against the current decks and probably refine a final sideboard. I’m hoping this will be done before Wednesday as I will be leaving for Manila on that day. *crosses fingers*

To end, I hope the coming days will be favorable for the team and I wish the rest of the guys good luck and have fun this Nationals weekend. Oh, and follow me on Twitter for I will probably tweet updates during the event. Until the next post and thanks for reading.

The banning surely had opened up the Magic: the Gathering Standard metagame to new decks and punished a few old ones. Cawblade is the one primarily affected though based on the recent results of big events in the US and various National Championships, the deck is still a powerhouse even without the mind sculptor and the mystic. That would be another topic though as this article is about the other deck affected by the banning, the Boros aggro.

<ins class="adsbygoogle"
 style="display:inline-block;
	min-width:100px;
	max-width:970px;
	width:100%;

As previously observed, Red White aggro is still a common deck choice before the bans due to the power of the Stoneforge Mystic. With similar plans to Blue White regarding fetching equipment, this version is the Bash-type (Blue White is the Fish type). Let us check a regular decklist and see what the M12 Core set can offer to replace the old/banned parts.

Boros Landfall by Chikara Nakajima
Finalist, GP Singapore 2011

Maindeck
4 Arid Mesa
4 Marsh Flats
6 Mountain
6 Plains
4 Scalding Tarn
2 Terramorphic Expanse

4 Goblin Guide
1 Hero of Oxid Ridge
4 Mirran Crusader
4 Squadron Hawk
4 Steppe Lynx
4 Stoneforge Mystic

1 Batterskull
3 Dismember
3 Koth of the Hammer
4 Lightning Bolt
2 Sword of War and Peace

Sideboard
2 Arc Trail
3 Divine Offering
1 Gideon Jura
4 Kor Firewalker
3 Spellskite
1 Sword of Body and Mind
1 Sword of Feast and Famine

The list above is straightforward and has seen success in defeating the pre-banning Cawblade. Let us tweak this list a bit to fit the meta. The cards needing changes are:

Stoneforge Mystic – obviously, on Xmen (the tone if you’re watching that late 90’s cartoon show).

Mirran Crusader – the effectiveness of this knight has lessened without the mystic fetching swords for him.

Batterskull – this is a good five-drop but it fits more for the control rather than the aggro decks.

My updated post-banning M12 Standard list would look like this:

Boros Aggro by Mark Ian Alloso

Maindeck
4 Arid Mesa
4 Marsh Flats
6 Mountain
6 Plains
4 Scalding Tarn
2 Inkmoth Nexus

4 Blade Splicer
4 Goblin Guide
3 Grim Lavamancer
1 Hero of Bladehold
4 Squadron Hawk
4 Steppe Lynx
4 Stormblood Berserker

2 Dismember
1 Ajani Goldmane
1 Elspeth Tirel
4 Lightning Bolt
2 Sword of War and Peace

Here are my explanations of the card choices:

Blade Splicer – This I think is the popular three-drop card of the current Standard. It forces you to deal primarily with the 3/3 Golem and the 1/1 which gives first strike and ruins most combat shenanigans. I’ve played with and against this card and it definitely can stop most aggro decks to a halt.

Stormblood Berserker – With ten one-drops in the deck, this surely will come out as 3/3 at most on your second turn. With its evasion bonus, it gets to connect most early damage until you can finish off your opponent with a burn spell or the lavamancer.

Grim Lavamancer – One of the popular drop-guys in Magic gets a return on stage with the M12 reprint. He works well with the fetch lands and is also a late-game finisher and a burn source.

Hero of Bladehold – Also a popular choice in recent Cawblade lists, this chic curve out your four drops and pumps out the rest of the guys if left unchecked. Suggest it to cast post-Day of Judgement or Black Sun Zenith.

Ajani Goldmane and Elspeth Tirel – Ajani what? I know this is an odd choice but based on the number of critters on the deck, a +1 on Ajani Goldmane gets you way beyond other aggro decks. It also annoys RDW too. Elspeth is a good post-mass removal drop and also a source of critters to carry the swords.

Inkmoth Nexus – Replacing Terramorphic Expanses, I’d go with these man lands as another evasive source to connect Sword damage. They can also function as Bloodthirst enablers for the berserkers.

The sideboard would be pretty much meta-based and it would look like the following:

1 Act of Aggression
2 Arc Trail
2 Divine Offering
4 Kor Firewalker
2 Oblivion Ring
3 Spellskite
2 Timely Reinforcements

I am obviously a fan of one-of and two-ofs so yeah, you can see it there. The only complete set would be the firewalkers as Pyroclasm is definitely a problem against this deck and it can stem the bleeding against RDW. The spellskites are the added sideboard for Blue Red Twin (with Dismembers maindeck) and O-rings in particular are generic for other various matchups.

For comments and suggestions, just post them below. I’d really like to hear your opinions.

Until the next post.

It seems that Wizards changed its style in previewing cards of the upcoming set, or was it caused by an undisclosed info. Just recently, a source posted on the MTG Salvation’s Rumor mill and leaked all the cards of the set which maybe forced the mothership to preview them all ahead of schedule. As I’ve sorted each of the cards, it seems that it will just be a support set for standard.

What I am interested on is the new mechanic of Phyrexian mana. These mechanic is looking to shout imba and be abused, if combined with the right cards. I’ve came up with a few deck ideas in mind which I’ll post later on. Overall, I think New Phyrexia will complete and smoothen the Metalcraft and Infect based decks and maybe keep in check control decks with its specific card type hate like Despise and Beast Within.

You can check the spoilers here at MTG Salvation.

Or, you would want to see the card images at the New Phyrexia card image gallery at the mothership.

5/5
Creature – (Giant)
At the beginning of the game, if ~ is in your hand, you may reveal it. If you do, at the beginning of your first turn’s upkeep, you may put a 1/1 red goblin creature with Haste on the battlefield.
When this enters the battlefield, put X 1/1 red goblin creatures with Haste onto the battlefield, where X is the number of creatures you control.

Wizards announced yesterday at Magic Arcana regarding the next upcoming Core set in Magic: The Gathering Trading card game, Magic 2011 which will be released this July 16, 2010. The set is dubbed “A set everyone can sink their teeth into.” which made me think of new interesting cards they’re going to include. Here’s a part of the announcement:

Standard now rotates only once each year, with the release of the October large set. So Magic 2011 will enter Standard on its release without knocking anything out, then Magic 2010 and Shards of Alara block will leave Standard with the release of “Lights.” The Standard format between Magic 2011 and “Lights” will consist of Shards of Alara block, Zendikar block, Magic 2010, and Magic 2011. After the release of “Lights,” it will consist of Zendikar Block, Magic 2011, and “Lights.”

In addition, they previewed an art of a Dragon in the set which is speculated to be the new level of Dragons much powerful than the previous ones released. Check out its very cool art.

Stay tuned for updates on Magic 2011. Until next time.
