As a competitive Magic: The Gathering player, I’ll be honest—when I first heard about the Final Fantasy crossover, I expected cool flavor and casual appeal. What I didn’t expect was how much the mechanics would shake up Standard deck building.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display:inline-block;
	min-width:100px;
	max-width:970px;
	width:100%;
	height:200px" data-ad-client="ca-pub-2323336148464359" data-ad-slot="7353149719"></ins>

These aren’t just reskinned classics—they’re introducing new layers of interaction that demand attention at the top tables. The “Tiered” mechanic, Saga creatures, and Job-based synergies aren’t just flavorful—they’re format-defining.

The “Tiered” mechanic has changed how we evaluate spells in midrange and tempo decks. Cards like Thunder Spell (Tiered) give you scalable value, meaning your topdecks stay relevant deep into the game. This forces deckbuilders to rethink curve structure—not just mana cost, but how you sequence plays to maximize Tier bonuses. It rewards tight resource management and enables flexible responses, which is exactly what you want in a format full of swingy midrange mirrors.

Saga creatures are another game-changer. Unlike typical Sagas, these transform into creatures after completing their chapters. Cards like Summon: Bahamut don’t just represent delayed value—they’re two-for-ones that dodge sorcery-speed removal early and demand an answer later. In practice, they play like a mini-game inside the match. As a control player, I have to time my removal differently. As an aggro or midrange player, I get to pressure without overcommitting. It’s a dynamic that’s added real tension to sequencing and sideboarding.

Job synergy is the sleeper hit of the set. Instead of relying solely on creature types like Wizard or Soldier, the new Final Fantasy cards encourage you to think in terms of Jobs: Black Mage, Monk, Dragoon, etc.

Decks like Rakdos Midrange/Reanimator and the Izzet Prowess before it bans the core cards are already finding value in weaving together Job-specific synergies to unlock extra effects. These Jobs force you to evaluate your deck composition not just by color or mana curve, but by role identity. It’s tribal without being linear, which is refreshing.

All told, the Final Fantasy mechanics have added meaningful complexity to Standard. They reward players who build with synergy in mind, but without demanding narrow, parasitic deck lists. You can mix and match—run Tiered spells in a shell that also supports Job synergies, or include a Saga creature package in an otherwise stock control deck.

As someone grinding for wins, I appreciate when new cards shake things up without breaking the game. And so far, Final Fantasy has nailed that balance.

Thanks for reading, and until the next blog post.

With the Magic: the Gathering Standard format still adjusting to recent bannings and the Edge of Eternity set looming, there’s growing curiosity around archetypes that were once overshadowed.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display:inline-block;
	min-width:100px;
	max-width:970px;
	width:100%;

One of the decks quietly gaining traction among competitive players is Dimir Dragons. Traditionally, a fringe strategy, the deck now has breathing room thanks to the exit of key oppressive cards—particularly those that fueled aggressive midrange and tempo shells. With new tools on the horizon and fewer format-warping threats to contend with, Dimir Dragons could finally make their move from rogue brew to real contender.

At its core, Dimir Dragons is a control-leaning midrange deck that uses early interaction to stall the board before unleashing large, evasive threats. Its identity lies in a mix of efficient removal (like Go for the Throat, Cut Down, and counterspells) paired with powerful dragon finishers. Cards like Silumgar’s Scorn may not be legal, but spiritual successors often exist in blue-based control shells as provided by the Tarkir Dragonstorm deck. The goal is to grind through the early game, trade resources one-for-one, then stick a flying threat that wins in a few swings and is hard to answer cleanly.

My TDM Standard Dimir Dragons Deck Tech that I uploaded two months ago.

The recent Standard bannings—specifically Monstrous Rage and Heartfire Hero—have significantly weakened hyper-aggressive Mono-Red strategies that previously kept slower decks in check. Without Monstrous Rage enabling early blowouts and Heartfire Hero providing cheap, die-trigger pressure, red aggro loses much of its ability to close games quickly or punch through removal. This shift opens the door for midrange and control builds like Dimir Dragons to stabilize more consistently in the early turns. With less pressure to survive turn-three kill setups, the deck can now lean into its strengths, which are efficient disruption, value-generating dragons, and inevitability in longer games.

What’s particularly exciting is how Edge of Eternity appears to be introducing a fresh suite of support for both Dragons and control strategies—potentially even within Dimir colors. Hints of tempo-positive flyers, discard synergy, and even graveyard recursion could give the deck more flexibility in both threat selection and game planning. If we get a dragon with built-in disruption or recursion (say, a dragon that reanimates or taxes opponents), Dimir will have a unique angle compared to the traditional red-based dragon lists.

As a competitive player, I’m watching Dimir Dragons closely. The strategy sits at the intersection of control and pressure—two things that thrive when the format slows down and stumbles through a shift.

The metagame is wide open, and if Edge of Eternity delivers just one or two efficient dragons or supporting tools, Dimir Dragons could turn from a side-table curiosity into a consistent tournament threat. This might be the deck that flies under the radar—until it starts flying over everything else.

Thanks for reading, and until the next blog post.

Alright, planeswalkers and deck-slingers, let’s talk about the unsung hero that just showed up at the Pro Tour Final Fantasy: the Selesnya Gearhulk deck. While everyone was brewing up the latest Izzet Prowess or perfecting their Domain Overlords, a few brave souls brought the green-white machine to the big stage.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display:inline-block;
	min-width:100px;
	max-width:970px;
	width:100%;
	height:200px" data-ad-client="ca-pub-2323336148464359" data-ad-slot="7353149719"></ins>

And let me tell you, this isn’t your grandma’s Selesnya tokens; this is a whole new level of grind and beatdown that could seriously shake up the Standard meta.

What makes this build tick? It’s all about the value engine, and Brightglass Gearhulk is the star of the show. Dropping this bad boy and immediately pulling two creatures out of your deck with its enter-the-battlefield trigger is just absurd. Imagine getting a couple of Pawpatch Recruits or Llanowar Elves to accelerate even further, or maybe something spicy like Haywire Mite for pesky artifacts and enchantments.

The deck aims to flood the board with resilient threats, leveraging the Gearhulk to consistently restock, ensuring you always have a follow-up, even through removal.

The true potential lies in its ability to adapt. We saw lists that leverage Collector’s Cage to cheat out massive threats, including the Gearhulk itself, while others leaned into aggressive, low-to-the-ground creature packages that benefit from the Gearhulk’s ability to pull out more attackers.

Selesnya’s access to targeted removal, life gain, and resilience through cards like Sheltered by Ghosts means it can stand toe-to-toe with the format’s top contenders. More so on its sideboard gameplan where the colors have access to cards that can answer to the current metagame. Keep an eye on this deck, because with the right pilot, it’s got the power to go from fringe contender to top-tier menace in no time.

Thanks for reading and until the next blog post.

Alright, so the new Magic: The Gathering – Final Fantasy set just dropped on June 13th, and let me tell you, it’s packed with awesome stuff! As a huge fan of both franchises, I’ve been poring over the card image gallery, and the black cards especially have some seriously cool flavor and powerful effects.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display:inline-block;
	min-width:100px;
	max-width:970px;
	width:100%;
	height:200px" data-ad-client="ca-pub-2323336148464359" data-ad-slot="7353149719"></ins>

It’s always fun to see how they translate beloved characters and iconic moments into MTG mechanics, and the designers really knocked it out of the park with the dark side of Final Fantasy.

What’s striking about these black cards is how well they capture the essence of the Final Fantasy villains and their more morally ambiguous heroes. You can almost feel the malice emanating from some of these, while others perfectly represent a character’s internal struggle or their eventual redemption. It’s not just about raw power; it’s about telling a story through gameplay. The way abilities interact and reflect their lore is a testament to the design team’s understanding of both universes.

The designers truly went all out with the set’s black cards, ensuring they weren’t just powerful in a vacuum but also deeply rooted in Final Fantasy lore. From iconic villains to complex heroes grappling with darkness, each card feels like a miniature narrative. This attention to detail means that whether you’re a long-time Final Fantasy enthusiast or a dedicated MTG player, there’s something genuinely exciting to discover in the dark corners of this new release.

First up, we’ve got Sephiroth, Fabled SOLDIER, and his flip side, Sephiroth, One-Winged Angel. This card is just pure villainy in cardboard form. The front side is already a menace, letting you draw cards and drain opponents whenever creatures die – which, in black, is all the time. This fits in an aristocrat type of deck. But when he transforms into One-Winged Angel, oh boy. He gives you an emblem that just keeps pinging your opponents whenever anything dies, and then he lets you sacrifice your creatures to attack even harder. Talk about a grand finale!

Then there’s Cecil, Dark Knight, who transforms into Cecil, Redeemed Paladin. This one’s a fantastic callback to his journey in Final Fantasy IV. As the Dark Knight, he’s aggressive and drains life from you, showcasing that internal struggle. But when you meet the conditions to flip him, he becomes a lifegaining, indestructible powerhouse. It’s such a perfect representation of his character arc, and it’s a powerful card that rewards you for leaning into his dark side before embracing the light.

Let’s not forget The Emperor, Hell Tyrant, a reprint of the always-awesome Yawgmoth, Thran Physician. This card is just chef’s kiss for any black deck that loves to sacrifice creatures for value. The Emperor lets you draw cards, put -1/-1 counters on creatures, and even sacrifice creatures to find more creatures. Its pure value, and pure power, and perfectly encapsulates the Emperor’s insidious influence from Final Fantasy II.

We also have Golbez, Clad in Darkness, which is a reprint of Syr Konrad, the Grim. If you love graveyard shenanigans and making your opponents suffer, Golbez is your guy. Every time a creature enters the graveyard from anywhere (which, again, in black, is a lot), he deals damage to each opponent. This isn’t just for your creatures either, it’s for any creature, meaning your opponents’ creatures dying only fuels your evil plans! He’s just a constant source of pain for your opponents, which is exactly what Golbez should be.

Finally, while not a legendary creature, The Darkness Crystal is a seriously cool black artifact. It makes your black spells cheaper, which is already a win. But then, if an opponent’s non-token creature would die, you exile it instead and gain life. And if that wasn’t enough, you can even pay some mana to put those exiled creatures directly onto the battlefield under your control! It’s such a flavorful way to represent the power of the crystals but with a decidedly black twist of stealing your opponent’s fallen warriors. This set truly delivers on the Final Fantasy vibe for black magic!

Thanks for reading, and until the next blog post.

As we explore the potential Standard deck archetypes with the entry of the Final Fantasy collaboration set, we check if they can offer a whole new level of gameplay. One new deck to place into the spotlight today is the Rakdos Wizards.

The Rakdos Kuja Wizards deck in Magic: The Gathering’s Final Fantasy crossover offers a fresh and strategic approach to Standard play. This deck tech showcases a mix of spell-slinging prowess and tribal synergy, bringing the powerful Kuja-inspired wizards to life on the battlefield. With an emphasis on tempo control and card advantage, Kuja Wizards presents exciting gameplay opportunities for both casual and competitive players. Whether you’re a fan of the Final Fantasy universe or a dedicated MTG enthusiast, this deck’s unique mechanics and flavorful interactions make it a compelling choice.

One of the highlights of the Kuja Wizards deck is its ability to leverage spells efficiently while maintaining board presence. The synergy between wizards and instant-speed spells allows players to adapt to shifting game dynamics and outmaneuver opponents.

By incorporating key Standard-legal cards that enhance wizard abilities, this deck excels at both offense and defense, making every turn a calculated decision. For players looking to refine their deck-building strategies or explore new archetypes, Kuja Wizards is a perfect blend of creativity and competition in the evolving MTG metagame.

With the upcoming release of the latest Magic: The Gathering Final Fantasy set, Landfall in Standard might finally be more than a fringe mechanic as it could actually be competitive. The new cards are giving the strategy the speed and consistency it’s been lacking prior.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display:inline-block;
	min-width:100px;
	max-width:970px;
	width:100%;

Early creatures that reward land drops, plus better mana options, are letting Landfall decks explode onto the board while slower strategies are still setting up. Every ramp spell, fetch effect, or land bounce now doubles as damage, board presence, or both.

The real strength of Landfall now is how well it scales. You’re not just playing out a few threats and hoping they stick—you’re triggering value turn after turn, building momentum without overextending. Even in the late game, Landfall decks can keep applying pressure thanks to smoother draws and more reliable payoffs. It’s not just an aggro gimmick anymore. With the right build, it can flex into midrange territory and punish decks that stumble. It is worth testing if you’re looking for a Standard deck that hits hard and stays active.

Here below is my MTG Final Fantasy Standard video deck tech for a Mono-color Green version of the Landfall Aggro deck strategy. Enjoy!
