Pauper is one of the best formats for new Magic: The Gathering players because it offers a low-cost, high-skill introduction to the game’s core mechanics. I can attest to this based on what we did in our local MTG Iloilo community years back.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display:inline-block;
	min-width:100px;
	max-width:970px;
	width:100%;
	height:200px" data-ad-client="ca-pub-2323336148464359" data-ad-slot="7353149719"></ins>

Unlike other formats, Pauper only allows cards printed at the common rarity, making it much more affordable to build competitive decks. This cost-friendly barrier to entry means new players can experiment, learn deck-building principles, and experience tournament-level gameplay without breaking the bank.

Another strength of Pauper is how it teaches essential MTG fundamentals. Because it lacks expensive, high-impact Mythics or Rares, success relies heavily on sequencing, resource management, and interaction. Players learn to optimize combat, manage the stack, and time removal or counterspells—skills that transfer to every other format. Cards like Lightning Bolt, Counterspell, and Deadly Dispute are staples that embody these core gameplay elements and are priced between $0.25 and $1, making them accessible and educational.

Pauper also showcases a diverse metagame, giving players exposure to different archetypes like aggro, control, midrange, and combo. Decks like Mono-Red Burn, Affinity, and Dimir Control all play uniquely, encouraging players to try various playstyles. This variety helps newer players understand how to adapt and sideboard effectively, while still being affordable; for example, a full Mono-Red Burn list with four Chain Lightning and four Kuldotha Rebirth might cost under $30 in total.

Additionally, Pauper communities tend to be welcoming and tight-knit, creating a great learning environment. Online platforms like Magic Online host regular Pauper events, and many local game stores support Pauper meetups or budget-friendly tournaments. The format’s egalitarian nature—where power comes from synergy and skill, not price—fosters a sense of fairness that’s ideal for helping new players feel included and competitive.

In short, Pauper is a smart, cost-effective way to get into Magic: The Gathering. It teaches core gameplay mechanics using widely available, low-cost cards and encourages players to build decks based on strategy rather than expensive staples. For anyone looking to develop strong fundamentals and enjoy competitive play without a steep financial commitment, Pauper is the perfect starting point.

Thanks for reading and until the next blog post.

Magic: The Gathering (MTG) Pauper format is a competitive format where players construct decks using only common cards. This unique restriction fosters creativity and strategy, making choosing creatures particularly crucial. Here, we discuss the five best creatures to use in the Pauper format, highlighting their abilities, roles in the game, and why they stand out in this competitive landscape.

<ins class="adsbygoogle"
   style="display:inline-block;

	max-width:970px;
	width:100%;

1. Delver of Secrets

Overview

Delver of Secrets is a blue creature that transforms into a 3/2 flying insectile aberration, Insectile Aberration, after revealing an instant or sorcery card at the beginning of your upkeep.

Key Features

Mana Cost: 1 Blue

Power/Toughness: 1/1 (transforms into 3/2)

Abilities: Transforms into a flying creature

Why It’s Powerful

Delver of Secrets is a staple in blue tempo decks due to its potential to become a 3/2 flying creature on turn 2. This early transformation can put significant pressure on opponents, especially in a format where efficient removal can be scarce. Its low mana cost and high potential damage output make it a formidable threat.

2. Gurmag Angler

Overview

Gurmag Angler is a black creature known for its significant power and toughness, often brought into play for a reduced cost thanks to the delve mechanic.

Key Features

Mana Cost: 6 Black

Power/Toughness: 5/5

Abilities: Delve (Each card you exile from your graveyard while casting this spell pays for 1)

Why It’s Powerful

Gurmag Angler leverages the graveyard to reduce its casting cost, often coming into play for just one or two mana. Its 5/5 body can dominate the battlefield, and it’s particularly effective in decks that fill the graveyard quickly, such as those using cantrips or discard spells. Its resilience to many common removal spells in Pauper makes it a reliable finisher.

<script async

<ins class="adsbygoogle"
     style="display:inline-block;width:300px;height:250px"

3. Kor Skyfisher

Overview

Kor Skyfisher is a white creature that is both versatile and efficient, often used in various archetypes for its utility.

Key Features

Mana Cost: 1 White, 1 Generic

Power/Toughness: 2/3

Abilities: Flying, return a permanent you control to its owner’s hand when it enters the battlefield

Why It’s Powerful

Kor Skyfisher’s ability to return a permanent to its owner’s hand is highly versatile, allowing for the reuse of enter-the-battlefield effects or saving a key permanent from removal. Its 2/3 flying body for two mana provides solid stats, making it both a defensive and offensive threat. This utility makes it a staple in many white-based decks.

4. Ninja of the Deep Hours

Overview

Ninja of the Deep Hours is a blue creature that can provide card advantage through its ninjutsu ability, making it a key component in tempo and control strategies.

Key Features

Mana Cost: 2 Blue, 2 Generic

Power/Toughness: 2/2

Abilities: Ninjutsu (1 Blue, 1 Generic), draw a card when it deals combat damage to a player

Why It’s Powerful

The ninjutsu ability allows Ninja of the Deep Hours to be swapped in for an unblocked attacker, often at a reduced cost, and immediately draw a card upon dealing combat damage. This ability provides a consistent card advantage and can be a game-changer in maintaining pressure on the opponent. Its synergy with evasive creatures makes it a frequent choice in blue-based decks.

5. Mulldrifter

Overview

Mulldrifter is a blue creature known for its versatility and card-drawing ability, fitting well into various archetypes.

Key Features

Mana Cost: 2 Blue, 3 Generic

Power/Toughness: 2/2

Abilities: Flying, evoke (2 Blue, 2 Generic), draw two cards when it enters the battlefield

Why It’s Powerful

Mulldrifter’s evoke ability allows it to be cast for its evoke cost to draw two cards, then sacrifice it. This flexibility makes it useful in both early and late-game situations. When cast normally, it provides a flying body and card advantage. Mulldrifter is often used in control and midrange decks due to its ability to refill the hand and provide a blocker or attacker when necessary.

Conclusion

In the Pauper format, the choice of creatures can significantly influence the outcome of a game. Delver of Secrets, Gurmag Angler, Kor Skyfisher, Ninja of the Deep Hours, and Mulldrifter each bring unique strengths and strategic advantages. Understanding and utilizing these creatures effectively can lead to greater success in Pauper tournaments and casual play alike.

Magic: The Gathering (MTG), a game known for its complexity and depth, has a variety of formats catering to different player preferences. Among these, Pauper stands out due to its unique appeal and sustained popularity. Today’s blog post delves into and counts the reasons why Pauper continues to be a beloved format among MTG players.

<ins class="adsbygoogle"
   style="display:inline-block;
	min-width:100px;
	max-width:970px;
	width:100%;
	height:200px"
   data-ad-client="ca-pub-2323336148464359"
   data-ad-slot="7353149719"></ins>

Affordability

One of the primary reasons for Pauper’s popularity is its affordability. In Pauper, only common cards are allowed, making it significantly cheaper compared to other formats like Standard or Modern. Common cards are more readily available and generally less expensive, allowing players to build competitive decks without breaking the bank. This lower barrier to entry makes Pauper accessible to a broader audience, including new players and those on a budget.

Competitive Balance

Pauper is renowned for its competitive balance. Since the card pool is restricted to commons, there’s a level playing field where no single deck dominates the meta for long periods. This balance fosters a healthy and dynamic metagame where a variety of strategies can thrive. Players often find that they can remain competitive with minor adjustments to their decks, promoting continuous engagement and creativity.

Deep Strategy and Skill

Despite its restriction to common cards, Pauper offers a surprising depth of strategy. The format includes a wide array of powerful and versatile cards, challenging players to optimize their deck-building and gameplay skills. The limited card pool necessitates creative problem-solving and strategic thinking, appealing to players who enjoy mastering intricate mechanics and outmaneuvering their opponents.

Nostalgia and Card Utilization

For many MTG players, Pauper provides a nostalgic trip down memory lane. It allows the use of older common cards that might not see play in other formats. This not only brings back fond memories but also gives value to cards that would otherwise be forgotten. Pauper decks often feature cards from various sets and eras, showcasing the rich history of MTG and providing a unique gameplay experience.

Community and Accessibility

The Pauper community is known for being welcoming and inclusive. Since the format is more accessible financially, it attracts a diverse group of players. Community events and online forums are active and supportive, providing resources and fostering a sense of camaraderie among Pauper enthusiasts. This strong community aspect enhances the enjoyment of the format and encourages more players to participate.

Online Play and Content Creation

Pauper’s popularity is also bolstered by its presence in online play and content creation. Platforms like Magic: The Gathering Online (MTGO) offer Pauper as a supported format, making it easy for players to compete and improve their skills digitally.

Additionally, content creators and streamers often feature Pauper gameplay, strategies, and deck techs, helping to sustain interest and inspire new players to explore the format.

Conclusion

Magic: The Gathering’s Pauper format remains popular for a multitude of reasons. Its affordability, competitive balance, strategic depth, nostalgic value, strong community, and online presence all contribute to its enduring appeal. For both new and seasoned players, Pauper offers a unique and engaging way to experience the richness of MTG without the high cost associated with other formats.

As the MTG community continues to grow and evolve, Pauper’s popularity is likely to endure, providing a vibrant and inclusive space for all players to enjoy.

Thanks for reading and until the next blog post.

I found this decklist posted at the MTG Top 8 website on the Pauper format category of the recent tournament results posted, which I surprisingly found as a Combo deck. Upon checking the full list, it was setting up for a combo kill.

For a short overview, this deck focuses on combining Goblins and sacrifice effects to generate mana and card advantage. Sacrificing the Putrid Goblin on the mana-generator Skirk Prospector while the First Day of Class is still in effect, it will create a loop of sacrificing and bringing back Goblins and generate infinite mana. The deck will then find a way to search for the combo with card draw effects like the Deadly Dispute up until you cast the Makeshift Munitions and then fodder the sacrifice effect to deal enough damage to your opponent’s life total.

The deck tech video below explains the Rakdos Goblins combo deck further so do enjoy watching the video.
