The current Magic: The Gathering’s The Hobbit set continues the exploration of cards for the Standard format, particularly for the White-based aggro decks. One card to highlight in today’s blog post is Bofur, Reliable Guardian.

Bofur, Reliable Guardian is an interesting defensive card from Magic: The Gathering’s The Hobbit set that offers more than its modest 1/1 body suggests. As a legendary Dwarf Scout with lifelink, Bofur provides a small creature that can contribute to the battlefield while also giving decks access to a flexible protection effect through its Adventure, Concerted Care. Its combination of protection, lifelink, and Adventure flexibility could make it a useful role-player in creature-based and value-oriented strategies.

Creatures with Adventure are Value

The most important part of Bofur is Concerted Care, a two-mana instant that gives a target artifact or creature you control both hexproof and indestructible until the end of the turn. This makes it particularly useful against targeted removal and board-control effects that would otherwise eliminate an important permanent.

In Standard, this type of protection can be valuable because protecting a key threat at the right moment can completely change the outcome of a game. Rather than committing another creature to the battlefield, Bofur allows the player to keep mana available for interaction while still having access to a defensive trick when the opponent attempts to remove a valuable permanent on your board whilst disrupting your aggro route.

The Adventure mechanic also gives Bofur additional flexibility compared with a traditional protection spell. Concerted Care can be cast first when protection is needed, while Bofur remains available to be cast later as a creature. This effectively gives the card two different functions and can help reduce the disadvantage of drawing a situational defensive spell when the game instead calls for a creature.

Although a 1/1 creature is unlikely to dominate combat on its own, gaining life can become relevant in games where aggressive decks are trying to reduce your life total. In particular, decks that generate value from legendary creatures, Dwarves, or sacrifice and creature-based synergies may find additional reasons to include Bofur beyond its protection effect.

Another potential strength is its ability to protect artifacts as well as creatures. This distinction could become important in Standard environments where powerful artifact permanents form part of a deck’s engine or provide significant value over several turns. Protecting a key artifact from targeted removal while simultaneously having Bofur available as a creature gives the card a useful degree of versatility.

Overall, Bofur, Reliable Guardian looks less like a traditional powerhouse and more like a flexible utility card that can reward careful timing and deck construction. Its Adventure provides meaningful protection, while its lifelink body gives it value when the defensive spell is no longer needed.

As we see the newly released Magic: the Gathering Universes Beyond set, The Hobbit, we look at the potential for new Blue counterspells. One card to highlight is Sound the Trumpets.

Sound the Trumpets has interesting potential in Standard as a flexible counterspell that rewards decks for keeping mana open. At 1UU, it counters any target spell and adds a recruit effect when the countered spell has mana value 2 or less, giving the card additional value beyond simply trading one-for-one.

Its biggest strength is against low-cost threats and efficient spells that commonly define aggressive and tempo-oriented Standard decks. Countering an early creature, removal spell, or cheap setup card while also filtering your hand and potentially creating a 1/1 Human Soldier token can help a control deck stabilize without completely falling behind on board presence.

The recruit ability also makes Sound the Trumpets more attractive than a conventional three-mana counterspell in decks that can exploit the token. Creature-based Azorius or Jeskai strategies could use the Soldier as an additional attacker, blocker, or resource for cards that care about creatures entering the battlefield, while the draw-and-discard component helps improve hand quality and potentially supports graveyard or nonland-card synergies.

The main limitation is its 1UU mana cost and conditional bonus, meaning it may compete with other powerful three-mana interaction in blue-based control decks.

Still, if the Standard metagame is filled with efficient two-mana spells, Sound the Trumpets could become a strong sideboard option—or even a main-deck consideration—for players looking for interaction that can counter threats while generating incremental value.

The Magiccon Panel showed previews of the upcoming set, The Hobbit, and one of the new cards that was highlighted was the legendary creature Bard, King of Dale. It’s a six-mana-cost 3/5 Human Noble Archer with two relevant replacement effects: drawing you more cards and producing twice the number of tokens.  

Although Bard, King of Dale carries a six-mana price tag, its effect is powerful enough to justify consideration as a finisher in slower Standard control archetypes. Traditional control decks often struggle to close games after stabilizing the battlefield, relying on a single resilient threat or an overwhelming source of card advantage.

Bard provides both by transforming every extra draw effect into twice the value while simultaneously doubling token production, allowing control players to shift from defense to offense in just a few turns.

One of Bard’s greatest strengths in control is its interaction with repeatable card draw. Once Bard resolves, every draw spell beyond the normal draw step effectively doubles, enabling control decks to quickly refill their hand after trading resources throughout the early and midgame. Rather than simply maintaining parity, Bard allows a control player to pull significantly ahead, ensuring they continue finding removal, counterspells, and additional threats while their opponent struggles to keep pace.

The token-doubling ability is equally important in the current Standard environment, particularly if control lists utilize token-producing planeswalkers, artifact generators, or creature-making enchantments. Instead of relying solely on a single finisher, Bard lets every token-producing effect become a legitimate win condition. A modest board of Soldier, Spirit, or artifact creature tokens can suddenly become an overwhelming army, forcing opponents to answer multiple threats rather than a single creature.

Bard also fits naturally into Bant Control shells, where Green provides ramp to accelerate into six mana, White contributes sweepers and efficient removal, and Blue supplies counterspells and card selection. This color combination already favors long games, making Bard an attractive top-end engine that rewards patient play. Once protected with countermagic, Bard’s 3/5 body with reach and vigilance can also stabilize combat against flying creatures while remaining available to block after attacking.

The biggest challenge for Bard, King of Dale is surviving long enough to generate value, as six-mana creatures are vulnerable to efficient removal. However, in slower metagames dominated by control mirrors or midrange attrition battles, resolving Bard after exhausting an opponent’s answers can immediately swing the game through overwhelming card advantage and token generation.

If Standard continues to favor grindy resource exchanges over hyper-aggressive strategies, Bard has the potential to emerge as a unique control finisher that wins not through raw power alone, but by burying opponents under an avalanche of cards and board presence.

Treasure strategies continue to be one of the most explosive mechanics in Magic: The Gathering, and Smaug the Magnificent brings that concept into Standard with both aggression and value.

Combining haste, flying, and direct damage scaling with Treasures, Smaug has the potential to become a strong finisher in Red-based midrange or ramp shells. While it may not immediately define the format, the card offers enough pressure and synergy to make players seriously consider building around it.

One of Smaug’s biggest strengths is immediate impact. A 4/3 flying haste creature already demands attention, but the attack trigger makes it even more threatening. In Treasure-heavy decks, Smaug can act as repeatable removal or direct reach to close out games quickly. Even with only a few Treasure tokens on the battlefield, the damage output becomes significant, forcing opponents to answer the dragon immediately or risk losing control of the game.

Its upkeep Treasure generation also gives the card long-term value beyond combat. Smaug naturally fuels its own ability over time, meaning every turn it survives increases both mana flexibility and offensive potential.

This makes it especially attractive in slower midrange decks that want to transition from resource generation into an overwhelming aerial threat. Pairing it with existing Treasure producers could allow Smaug to enter the battlefield already capable of dealing massive damage.

Overall, Smaug the Magnificent has strong Standard potential as both a finisher and synergy piece for Treasure archetypes. It rewards proactive gameplay while maintaining value in longer matches, a crucial trait in evolving Standard environments.

If Treasure support remains consistent in upcoming sets, Smaug could easily become one of the more exciting Red legendary threats for players who enjoy explosive, value-driven strategies.
