It was a wrap for the first day of the Magic: the Gathering Worlds Championships 2021 as I just got up today after staying late checking on the booster draft rounds of the tournament. Coping with the strategy of the Innistrad: Midnight Hunt limited format is quite a challenge as I have not read on the archetypes and the cards it composed. The good thing is that the coverage team was discussing it coupled with the short interview per player on the draft tables.

Anywho, the top players after Day 1 were Ondŕej Stráský with an undefeated 5-0 record, Sam Pardee and PV Damo Da Rosa with 4-1 record each, and the Japanese Yoshihiko Ikawa with a 3-2 record. Stráský is playing Izzet Turns for Standard and White-Black colors for the MID draft. This has proved that Izzet with the Epiphany engine is still being a powerhouse deck in the format.

We will see more if its performance is maintained tomorrow for Day 2 of the Magic: the Gathering Worlds Championships, which is happening 12:00 AM Sunday morning Philippine time.

Weeks ago, I had doubts of joining the Gameswalker 50k Tournament in Bacolod City this coming September 14^th, 2019. This was mainly because of my plan to only participate in the Philippines Judges Conference that will be held on the next day Sunday. My reason is I will be on focus on the activities of the conferences including the topics talks, discussions and group exercises on the application of the concepts.

What prompted me this time to join the tournament? Me missing the competition and serious gameplay. This might be an opportunity for me to redeem my place in the community. I think I am getting rusty but a little polishing will do.

What also inspired me to play was that I was able to complete the Orzhov Vampires deck which recently had achieved a Tier 1 status in the Standard Metagame. While the other archetypes are somewhat prepared to face this matchup, I am pretty sure this can be overcome by the deck given the right cards in the sideboard and the right situations.

It is barely a month to go before the Gameswalker weekend and the team preparation is rigid. I suggest them to do the playtest daily and with decks from the recent results from tournaments online.  Hopefully each day would be productive with the match results analyzed in the play-by-play scenario.

Will I be joining the main event? You will soon find out.

At times I try to update myself with the latest happenings in the other formats of Magic such as Modern. When I become stagnant in brewing for War of the Spark Standard, I tend to look for decklist in the past and try to contemplate a newer version with components from that of the latest Magic set.

Anyhow, one of the recent major events that I have looked on was Grand Prix or Magic Fest Yokohama. It was for the main reason that a friend and fellow Magic Judge, Reuben Ferrer, almost made it in the Top 8 with only the decimal difference in the rankings. The country would be really proud as he is the only foreign player that would have made it in the playoffs and a chance to win the title of champion for GP Yokohama.

I am currently here in Quezon City for the five days training on the Special Course on Urban and Regional Planning. While the lectures usually end at 5:00pm, I decided to check on the nearby MTG gamestores to participate in their scheduled tournaments. One that I have found was The Dragonforge shop, which is located inside the UP Town Center mall that is along Katipunan Avenue.

Their Standard Showdown schedule for the week was Tuesday afternoon at 5:30pm and I barely made it in time after rushing to get to the place from UP Diliman campus. Good thing my nephew who was studying in the university told me which jeepney to ride from the SURP building up to the overpass that is across the mall. There were already players waiting for the first round pairings and I immediately told them TO that I will be joining the tournament. I then made sure that my deck has the correct maindeck and sideboard cards. I browsed through the cards again to review on the deck strategy of the Gruul Warriors and to check if I interpreted the new cards correctly.

The first Round started about 10 minutes later with 16 players in attendance. Here is a recap of my matchups after the Swiss rounds.
