I have been building Standard Pauper decks for the new players to use for playtests and future tournaments. I sold them for about 50pesos each 60-card deck, which is a little revenue for me whenever I go on a booster buying spree.

So I have recently checked some Standard Pauper decklist at PDCMagic.com for some reference on my future builds as well to see some new deck brews from the MTGO players and I came up this deck archetype played by Adner. The deck is Mono Red agro updated with a few Madness spells and discard enablers from Shadows over Innistrad. He finished first place with a finesse record of 4-1.

I recently did a deck suggestion for a new player for the Standard Pauper tournament of the MTG Iloilo Community. He asked advice on what build the Eldrazi deck will look like in the format. I did a short research and made an initial draft list and here is what it looked like:

It was a success! The second event for Standard Pauper tournament last Sunday garnered a lot of new faces and players. The venue Hi-Gear was jam packed and there were 14 participants, maybe more if I was not late because I overslept after coming back from Bacolod. Anyhow, I was able to distribute almost all of my beginner card packages and was glad to see them excited to build their very first deck. I then started listing the players and paired them for Round 1. There were a few rules questions but I was glad that most of these newbies were able to properly execute each phases of the turn as well as the combat.

After the Swiss rounds, here are the top 4 players:

This is good news for those who are new to the game but want to play in their first-ever MtG tournament. The community will be providing card support to those beginner players who by definition are those who learned the game/started playing Magic: The Gathering.

This MtG Beginner benefits program will be implemented starting Feb 21, 2016. The details below:

• Each will receive one Standard commons/uncommons starter package (about 60-70 cards) & 25 basic lands.
• Free registration for the upcoming Standard Pauper tournaments.
• Eligible of the booster pack raffle if a certain number of participants is reached.

Players must then secure a DCI membership card from me or at Rei’s place so they can have their own DCI number to use for official Magic: the Gathering tournaments. FYI, Rei’s place is near Robinsons Iloilo at the side of the Mabini wing. See the map below.

So far I think we have five or six players who are eligible for this program and hopefully, there will be more people that will be introduced and recruited to the hobby. Tell your friends, classmates and colleagues to join us today.

The Sunday Standard Pauper tournament returned to Hi-Gear in Marymart Mall as the store can now give out booster pack prizes to the top finishers. I made the announcement one week ahead, and about ten players gathered to battle, a few will be their first time.

That meant four rounds of gameplay.

Team Carbo showed up with five participants, one of them a young apprentice who is a brother of one of their friends. Despite his age, I think he was playing a solid Blue Red Prowess deck, a tier one deck in the format. I gladly gave him some of the card freebies so he could practice building decks from a limited resource aspect.

Anyhow, I witnessed intense and back-and-forth matchups between players and it looked less of a beginners’ tournament as several awesome plays and good ol’ top decks were made. At the end of four rounds, here are the Top 3 finishers:

2nd, Martin (Blue Red Prowess)
3rd, Allen (Mono Red)

I was able to obtain a spare time earlier today to brew a Standard Pauper deck to add in my current lineup of decks for the upcoming Pauper tournaments. This recent brew was referenced from the Allies theme in Battle for Zendikar and Oath of the Gatewatch sets. I initially experienced the power of this archetype when we played Boros Allies on the last 2HG Prerelease. I have thought that it will be possible for a pauper version. Access to Black as a third color opens the door to card options such as Kalastria Healer and solid spot removals like Unholy Hunger.

I have again scheduled a Magic: the Gathering Standard Pauper tournament for the new faces in the MtG Iloilo community. Team Carbo will also be playing, together with their recruits. This time, the new set that will be included is Oath of the Gatewatch.

I am excited to see if Eldrazi Devoid based decks will emerged as a tier in the format. The event venue will be returning in Hi-Gear in Marymart Mall old building as the owner, Carlo is now selling Oath of the Gatewatch booster packs.
