If you’ve played in the Magic: the Gathering Standard recently, chances are you’ve been scorched and dominated by Izzet Prowess. The deck is everywhere—and for good reason. It’s fast with explosive alpha attacks, and rewards tight play with brutally efficient kills.

Anchored by low-cost creatures like Monastery Swiftspear and free token creatures generated from Stormchaser’s Talent and Cori-Steel Cutter, the deck floods the board early, then converts cheap spells into raw damage with prowess triggers. Combine that with a sleek spell package featuring burn spells like Burst Lightning, plus cantrips for gas, pump spells in Monstrous Rage, and you’ve got a recipe that punishes slow starts and fumbles hard.

What’s scary is how consistent it feels. Izzet Prowess doesn’t just win by curving out—it can play the long game too, using tempo and draw to stay ahead. Even decks built to counter it—think heavy removal or lifegain—struggle to keep pace if they stumble even slightly.

Unless the meta shifts with serious hate or a ban hits a key card, it looks like Izzet’s holding the torch for now. This blend of aggression and flexibility makes Blue-Red Prowess perfect for players who thrive on fast-paced, decision-heavy games—where sharp timing and small edges quickly spiral into a win.

Check out below some of the recent gameplay matches of the Izzet Prowess deck done on MTG Arena.

The release of Tarkir: Dragonstorm set has assured us that Dragons are really back in the Standard format metagame. The Dragons deck in Standard is built around powerful flying creatures that hit hard and take over games once they hit the board. It typically uses early ramp or support spells to accelerate its mana, letting it play high-cost threats ahead of schedule. Other versions use board control and counterspells, which I will share a deck tech for in a bit.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display:inline-block;
	min-width:100px;
	max-width:970px;
	width:100%;
	height:200px" data-ad-client="ca-pub-2323336148464359" data-ad-slot="7353149719"></ins>

These dragons aren’t just big—they often bring added value, like damaging opponents or controlling the board as they enter. The deck leans toward a midrange-to-big strategy, blending control, creature removal, and finishers into a streamlined game plan that punishes slow starts and rewards patience. The Omen mechanic made the strategy lean to a sustainable late-game.

What makes the Dragons archetype stand out is its ability to snowball an advantage. Once a dragon sticks, every turn can swing momentum further in your favor, with more dragons or synergistic effects piling on pressure. Though it might not be as fast as aggro, it carves out a strong space in the meta by threatening huge swings and dominating the air. For players who enjoy bold plays, game-ending creatures, and are particularly familiar with the old Tarkir set with the Dragonlords, the new version of Spirit Dragons in Tarkir: Dragonstorm offers both spectacle and strength.

Check out below a Standard deck tech for a Dimir Dragons control deck build.

In Magic: the Gathering Standard format, one of the rising archetypes is the Blue-Red Prowess. It is a fast, aggressive deck that combines cheap spells with creatures that grow stronger every time you cast a noncreature spell. Blending explosive offense with light disruption creates constant pressure that can overwhelm opponents before they stabilize.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display:inline-block;
	min-width:100px;
	max-width:970px;
	width:100%;
	height:200px" data-ad-client="ca-pub-2323336148464359" data-ad-slot="7353149719"></ins>

A standard Blue-Red (Izzet) Prowess deck revolves around cheap, efficient spells and creatures that reward you for casting noncreature spells. The core idea is to play low-cost threats like Monastery Swiftspear (utilizing the Prowess trigger), and recently from the Tarkir: Dragonstorm set Cori-Steel Cutter, all of which benefit from spellcasting by gaining temporary buffs or creating additional value when casting two spells. The deck maximizes its efficiency with a dense spell package made up of cheap cantrips, burn spells, and protection spells like Spell Pierce to maintain constant pressure while disrupting opponents.

The strength of Blue-Red Prowess lies in its ability to be explosively aggressive while also having a tempo-control element. You can play a lightning-fast game, chipping in damage with ever-growing threats, then finish opponents with spells like Burst Lightning, or even newer burn variants. The blue side of the deck brings resilience: counterspells and bounce effects help protect your board from sweepers and remove key blockers.

This dual nature—being both proactive and reactive—makes Blue-Red Prowess an ideal choice for players who enjoy dynamic, decision-heavy games where timing is critical and small advantages snowball into quick victories.

Check out below an example decklist that finished 1st place in a recent MTG Event.

Tear Asunder is a highly useful main deck card in the current MTG Standard metagame because it offers flexible, efficient removal in a format filled with problematic noncreature permanents. Right now, many top-tier decks lean on enchantments like Up the Beanstalk, Leyline Binding, or artifacts like Cori-Steel Cutter and Urabrask’s Forge. Having a main-deck answer to these without relying on narrow sideboard tech is a huge advantage.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display:inline-block;
	min-width:100px;
	max-width:970px;
	width:100%;
	height:200px" data-ad-client="ca-pub-2323336148464359" data-ad-slot="7353149719"></ins>

Even without the kicker, Tear Asunder cleanly handles early threats at instant speed, keeping your opponent’s tempo in check while preserving your game plan as you curve to your big spells.

What really pushes the card over the top is its kicker mode, letting it exile any nonland permanent for just four mana. That flexibility makes it live in almost every matchup—whether you’re dealing with planeswalkers like Ugin, creatures like Sheoldred, the Apocalypse, or even surprise tech like Bitter Triumph-protected threats.

In a Standard where many decks play across multiple card types and use recursion or value engines, Tear Asunder gives you a clean exile effect that cuts through those strategies. It’s proactive, reactive, and relevant in nearly every game one scenario—exactly what you want from a strong main deck tool.

Here below is an example lineup of spot removal spells in your maindeck build where the card fits in.

Deck: Golgari Midrange

Good day, the newest set Tarkir: Dragonstorm is set to hit the various formats this weekend, and the new card and deck strategies are added in particularly to Standard which I am to discuss another archetype. Today’s deck archetype blog post highlights a previously existing deck build that revolves around recursion and sacrifice effects.

If you are a regular grinder on MTG Online or Arena, I am pretty sure that you have encountered this deck. The build’s core colors are Orzhov (Black and White) and is mostly composed of small critters that benefit from ETB lifegain and sacrifice trigger abilities. My new deck build suggests adding a third color, Red, referring to the Mardu clan that has been reintroduced from the new set. It opened a whole new 3-color card components with potential synergies with the core gameplay of the deck.

Do check out the deck tech video below and also don’t forget to like and subscribe to my Magic: the Gathering Youtube channel, Deathmarked TV.

Going into the Friday Night prerelease for Tarkir: Dragonstorm, I mostly rode on nostalgia. The original Tarkir block left a strong impression—vibrant clans, wedge colors, and of course, dragons. With the return to the plane, I was hoping Wizards would strike a balance between familiar themes and something new for the players.

I visited this place, Elves and Espresso, for the first time and saw a unique and relaxing ambiance that is far from the usual LGS setting. The shop is half coffee and gaming store, and they had the only schedule of an in-store prerelease on a Friday night. The owner was friendly and accommodating and greeted me when I arrived. He allowed the players to choose their clans for the PR kits, and I decided Abzan. I believed in a Reddit post that this clan has a better seeded pack than the rest.

We started deck-building at 7:10 pm and my cracking the packs brought immediate excitement: clan-flavored cards were back, but the mechanics had evolved. The Abzan developed the Endure mechanic, a choice between spirit tokens or +1/+1 counters on your creatures. Once I got to play, it was clear the set was built for momentum but still maintained a long-game strategy. My deck, a Black-White-Green midrange build, curved into a few dragons surprisingly well thanks to a few mana support creatures that fixed the color and made sure you have your land drops.

Every round felt dynamic. I saw games in my creatures curve well, with a few spot removals to deal with opposing blockers. Some games went long enough for dragons to hit the board, and when they did, they took over.

The mix of pressure and payoff made for one of the most engaging prerelease experiences I’ve had in a while. The deck build I think is nothing special but I am happy to develop a three-color deck strategy again after a long while. See below the video preview of my Abzan PR sealed deck.

Notice the creature curve and the Rare card choices I played out of my limited MTG card pool.

Identifying Commander potential in cards from the Tarkir: Dragonstorm deck starts with one key question: can this card generate value over time? In Commander, cards that scale with the game, impact multiple opponents, or provide repeatable benefits tend to thrive. Look for abilities that trigger on each upkeep, each attack, or when creatures enter or leave the battlefield. These effects compound over the course of a long multiplayer game and often create powerful synergies that Commander decks are built around.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display:inline-block;
	min-width:100px;
	max-width:970px;
	width:100%;
	height:200px" data-ad-client="ca-pub-2323336148464359" data-ad-slot="7353149719"></ins>

Next, consider mana efficiency versus impact. In Commander, where games go longer, high mana costs aren’t inherently bad—but the card needs to do enough to justify it. A 7-mana dragon that only swings for 5 damage won’t cut it unless it brings a game-shifting ability, like drawing cards, controlling the board, or flooding the field. Conversely, low-cost utility creatures or enchantments that enable combos, smooth your curve, or shut down opponents’ strategies are often Commander gold. Always weigh what a card gives you now versus how it plays over multiple turns.

Another strong indicator of Commander potential is versatility. Cards with modal abilities, scaling effects, or hybrid mana costs fit into more decks and give players more control over how they’re used. Dragons that offer more than combat—such as removing threats, generating tokens, or enabling spell synergies—will see more play. Cards that interact well with multiple popular strategies (e.g., token generation, graveyard recursion, or artifact synergies) are especially valuable in Commander’s varied environments.

Also, watch for cards that support or enable archetypes. Some Commander staples aren’t flashy—they’re enablers. For example, a card that gives your Dragons haste, discounts your spells, or returns creatures from the graveyard might not look like a bomb, but in the right deck, it’s a core piece. Tarkir: Dragonstorm is loaded with tribal synergy, and identifying cards that glue strategies together—rather than just dominate the board—can be key to spotting long-term staples.

Finally, look beyond the face value of cards. Commander players love interactions, combos, and flavor. A card might seem niche until you realize it enables a specific combo, breaks parity in a stax setup, or lets you recur spells endlessly. Read every new card with an eye toward not just what it does—but how it fits into broader Commander strategies. Those are the cards that end up in decks for years, even if they aren’t obvious at first glance.

Thanks for reading and until the next blog post.

Combo decks in Magic: The Gathering (MTG) Standard continue to perform well because they exploit efficient synergies between new and existing cards. Each Standard rotation introduces powerful mechanics that enable explosive interactions, often overlooked during initial set evaluations.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display:inline-block;
	min-width:100px;
	max-width:970px;

Many recent sets have featured cards with low setup costs and high payoff, allowing combo decks to execute their game plans consistently. Additionally, combo decks thrive in Standard when control and aggro decks fail to apply enough pressure, giving them time to assemble their key pieces. The balance of threats and answers in the format plays a crucial role in determining whether combo strategies can dominate.

Another reason combo decks remain competitive is the increasing presence of tutors, card draw, and recursion mechanics in Standard. Wizards of the Coast has printed more cards that allow players to dig for specific pieces or recur threats, making combos more reliable.

Additionally, certain mana acceleration tools—whether from artifacts, enchantments, or ramp creatures—help execute game-winning plays ahead of schedule.

With fewer dedicated hate cards available in Standard compared to older formats like Modern or Legacy, many decks struggle to effectively disrupt the combo strategies before they go off. As a result, combo decks continue to post strong performances, capitalizing on the format’s evolving card pool and metagame shifts.

Today’s Standard Combo deck potential features the update of the Golgari Bloodthirsty Conqueror deck that uses new card components from the new set Tarkir: Dragonstorm. Check out the deck tech video below.

The latest Magic: The Gathering set is here, bringing powerful new cards that could shake up the Standard format. Whether you’re looking to dominate the battlefield with dragons or control the game with strategic land plays, these fresh additions offer exciting possibilities for every player.

As the upcoming set Tarkir Dragonstorm is set to release in two weeks, we are now in the period of identifying potential cards for deck building in various Magic: the Gathering formats. One of my favorites is Standard, and I am excited to explore the new possible archetypes that this set offers. Also, I think this set will make an impact on the format’s metagame with its set of new mechanics and cards that align with it.

The upcoming Tarkir: Dragonstorm set, scheduled for release on April 11, 2025, introduces several promising cards poised to impact the Standard format. Among these are Disruptive Stormbrood and Whirlwing Stormbrood, two dragon-themed creatures that offer unique abilities to control the battlefield. Disruptive Stormbrood introduces a mechanic that hampers opponents’ spellcasting, while Whirlwing Stormbrood removes your Sorcery and Dragon spells casting restrictions making them more efficient in combat.

Another noteworthy addition is Mistrise Village, a blue utility land from a new cycle representing each clan’s color. Mistrise Village offers versatile functionality, potentially serving as a valuable asset in control and tempo strategies. Its effectiveness may vary depending on deck composition and the evolving metagame.

These are just a feel of the cards from the new set, and as these cards become available, players should consider how they align with existing strategies and the potential they have to shape new archetypes within Standard.
