The Brothers’ War card spoilers would either come from the community or the official reveal of Wizards of the Coast. My usual go-to website is the Reddit Thread for Magic: the Gathering TCG as they are usually the first to post these news and card spoilers for an upcoming set. Of course, other sources’ websites do the compiling of the card spoilers revealed so far.

For checking the card potential, we usually do this by associating the abilities and uses of the card in the ideal deck list. In my case, each of the card’s potential would be assessed when in actual use in the deck build. Today’s card spoiler is based on the first two notes: 1st, provide late-game gas; and 2nd, good abilities to mana sink on.

The officer is one of the best one-drops in aggro decks that can still be relevant even in the late game. That is because of its ability to “recruit” a 3-mana or less creature card from the Top four cards of your library. Checking on the current lineup of the White Aggro deck in Standard, I am pretty sure that its ability will not miss as several notable three-drops can also provide value themselves.

Surge Engine, on the other hand, benefits from a good mana sink which can be more effective in the late game. Early on, it is just a 3/2 that can trade for early aggro of opponents and also vulnerable to two-damage spot removals. That is situational of course, as there are midrange matchups wherein having this early on and unblockable and making it an early clock for three damage each turn can prove to be great threat against those decks. This is also given that Blue-based decks like tri-color Esper and Grixis can use this card as one of their late game win conditions.

Overall, both cards are amazing in their respective roles and functions in the deck. As the set continue with its card spoilers in the coming weeks, we will check what other new cards will coincide or benefit from their abilities and come up with a new synergy for the format.
