As we see the newly released Magic: the Gathering Universes Beyond set, The Hobbit, we look at the potential for new Blue counterspells. One card to highlight is Sound the Trumpets.

Sound the Trumpets has interesting potential in Standard as a flexible counterspell that rewards decks for keeping mana open. At 1UU, it counters any target spell and adds a recruit effect when the countered spell has mana value 2 or less, giving the card additional value beyond simply trading one-for-one.

Its biggest strength is against low-cost threats and efficient spells that commonly define aggressive and tempo-oriented Standard decks. Countering an early creature, removal spell, or cheap setup card while also filtering your hand and potentially creating a 1/1 Human Soldier token can help a control deck stabilize without completely falling behind on board presence.

The recruit ability also makes Sound the Trumpets more attractive than a conventional three-mana counterspell in decks that can exploit the token. Creature-based Azorius or Jeskai strategies could use the Soldier as an additional attacker, blocker, or resource for cards that care about creatures entering the battlefield, while the draw-and-discard component helps improve hand quality and potentially supports graveyard or nonland-card synergies.

The main limitation is its 1UU mana cost and conditional bonus, meaning it may compete with other powerful three-mana interaction in blue-based control decks.

Still, if the Standard metagame is filled with efficient two-mana spells, Sound the Trumpets could become a strong sideboard option—or even a main-deck consideration—for players looking for interaction that can counter threats while generating incremental value.
