Preparing for Standard rotation into Return to Ravnica is not an easy task. As with every new set of Magic, it would take time to brew an effective decklist for the expected metagames. For the mean time, I’ll just focus on the given decks before the rotation. I will tackle today on the Tokens deck and what RTR has to offer. Here is my suggested list.
WGb Tokens
By Mark Ian Alloso
Lands
2 Gavony Township
8 Plains
1 Forest
3 Isolated Chapel
4 Sunpetal Grove
2 Overgrown Tomb
4 Temple Garden
Creatures
4 Precinct Captain
1 Armada Wurm
1 Angel of Jubilation
Spells
2 Gather the Townsfolk
3 Farseek
4 Call of the Conclave
4 Garruk Relentless
2 Selesnya Charm
4 Lingering Souls
1 Rootborn Defenses
4 Midnight Haunting
2 Oblivion Ring
4 Intangible Virtue
Let us discuss the RTR card inclusions.
Precint Captain – this awesome two-drop suits well on White Weenie but I’d give it a shot here in the tokens deck. Too bad Honor of the Pure will not be reprinted.
Call of the Conclave – this pseudo-Watchwolf token generating sorcery gives you option to beatdown early if you don’t draw the captain. I personally would prefer this over Gather the Townsfolk on turn two.
Selesnya Charm – this charm can work offensively and defensively and I really liked the ‘purge’ effect on the choices.
Armada Wurm – in cases you would need a badass big guy err wurm.
Rootborn Defenses – double purpose of protecting your tokens and Populate, and three cc is very reasonable for me.
I think Farseek is needed to fix up mana and make it possible for a turn-three Garruk. I believe counterspells will lessen after rotation because of the loss of Mana Leak. That is unless people would prefer Syncopate, which I think, is not that effective.
Even with the absence of Honor of the Pure, I think the deck would still perform well. What sideboard should I use? Just let me know on the comments below, though I am sure I should sideboard against Thalia.
Thanks for the read and until next post.
