Hello, I will be talking today about an archetype that has been dwindling in attendance in the recent Standard tournaments. Well, it has its other popular (sort of) version but today is on another build of the deck.
The deck I am referring to is the Black White Tokens. I remember piloting a pre-RTR version of the deck in Grand Prix Kuala Lumpur last March wherein I almost made it Day 2. Anyhow, the little splash I said is that I am adding Red to the list.
Here is my current version:
B/W Tokens with Red
By Mark Ian Alloso
Lands
2 Blood Crypt
2 Clifftop Retreat
2 Evolving Wilds
4 Isolated Chapel
2 Vault of the Archangel
6 Plains
5 Swamp
1 Mountain
Creatures
4 Falkenrath Aristocrat
3 Doomed Traveler
Spells
4 Gather the Townsfolk
4 Intangible Virtue
4 Lingering Souls
3 Sorin, Lord of Innistrad
2 Liliana of the Veil
2 Oblivion Ring
3 Duress
3 Midnight Haunting
1 Increasing Devotion
1 Altar’s Reap
1 Faith’s Shield
1 Sever the Bloodline
The ‘red’ splash is obviously Falkenrath Aristocrat. This hasty Vampire persists on most board sweep and can go past through Thragtusks and other ground fatties. Not to mention she can also feed on Human tokens to beef up. I think she is the right creature to hasten the clock of the deck, aside from curving to the usual Spirit tokens and Intangible Virtue.
Pardon the one-ofs but I think they are situational cards needed to bypass plays. That means these cards won’t be needed most of the time but they’d be a good help once drawn.
Main decked Duress is basically of good use because U/W Flash has been rising in popularity recently. They are also used in discarding board sweepers particularly the uncounterable Supreme Verdict.
I’ve caught on Liliana of the Veil as Black’s best removal at the moment, as it deals with Geist of St Traft and also force discard your opponent.
The initial list for the sideboard will probably have Pillars of Flame and Rest in Peace, also a fourth Duress and more Oblivion Rings.
Comments and suggestion are much appreciated.
Until next post.
