Opening booster packs is one of the most exciting aspects of trading card games such as Magic: The Gathering, Pokémon, and other collectible card games. The anticipation of revealing each card creates a thrilling experience for both casual players and collectors. However, many players often wonder about their actual chances of pulling valuable or highly sought-after cards from a random booster pack.

The odds of opening a “good” card are largely determined by the card’s rarity. Most booster packs contain a combination of common, uncommon, and rare cards, with some packs also featuring mythic rares, foil cards, or special showcase versions. Since rare and mythic rare cards appear less frequently than commons and uncommons, the likelihood of opening a specific high-value card is naturally much lower.

For example, imagine a set with 10 different rare cards and each booster pack contains one rare slot. Assuming each rare appears equally often, your chance of opening a specific rare card would be approximately 1 in 10, or 10%.

If the card you are looking for is a mythic rare that only appears occasionally in place of a rare, the odds become even smaller. This scarcity is one reason why certain cards command higher prices in the secondary market.

It is important to remember that rarity does not always equal value. Some rare cards may have little competitive or collector demand, while certain uncommon cards can become highly desirable due to their strength in tournament play.

Ultimately, opening booster packs is a game of probability rather than certainty. While understanding pack odds can help set realistic expectations, luck remains a major factor in every pack opening experience. Whether you are chasing a powerful tournament staple, a collectible foil, or simply enjoying the excitement of cracking packs, every booster offers the possibility of uncovering something special.

I went to Rei place yesterday to check on the Special Standard tournament held there that includes special promo boosters and foil Theros Beyond Death full mana art basic lands. There were about 20 players in attendance and entering the second round of competition when I arrived. After depositing my card loots from the Theros Beyond Death prerelease, I decided to crack some booster packs of the new set.

I got the Rare Shadowspear along with a foil Hateful Eidolon. The equipment is currently looking for an ideal deck to be used in Standard and if ever the All that Glitters deck becomes popular then surely it will become the first choice of the sideboard to against that strategy.

Haktos was my superstar card during the Prerelease. It might see Standard play soon but you should be lucky enough on the random roll on the protection for it to be effective.

Last but not least, the Rare I’ve opened was Mantle of the Wolf. It is considered a crap card at the moment, but am planning to build a Naya-based Auras deck with Storm Herald that can bring them back in the late game. The deck list to be posted soon.

That is a wrap for the first batch of Theros Beyond Death booster pack openings. Those were average cards unlike what I opened the last time off-camera and hoping on the next I would have at least one Mythic in my packs.

I covered some booster cracking sessions during the MTG Iloilo Community Year-Ender tournament, and one, in particular, is this video wherein I opened three Throne of Eldraine booster packs and one special promo pack. I made a makeshift stand for the cellphone to get the right camera angle. It was a pretty short record,d but I decided to add a few effects and a title intro.
