Last weekend was a really busy one for Magic communities around the globe. A few countries held their National Championships (including here in the Philippines) and the US had two major events, the SCG 5k at Richmond and the TCGPlayer 75k Champs in Chicago. The Magic: the Gathering Philippine Nationals will be in this coming weekend and my excitement is, well, quite indefinite. This is actually my second time qualifying for this event (the first one was way back in 2003) and the first time I’m actually going there. I’m quite happy because Iloilo’s attendance for this year, as compared to the previous years, is fairly high with seven players qualified. Continue reading
The banning surely had opened up the Magic: the Gathering Standard metagame to new decks and punished a few old ones. Cawblade is the one primarily affected though based on the recent results of big events in the US and various National Championships, the deck is still a powerhouse even without the mind sculptor and the mystic. That would be another topic though as this article is about the other deck affected by the banning, the Boros aggro.

The hitting of the ban hammer on the two powerful cards in Cawblade has left the Standard format open to new brew and build of decks. Though previous tier 1 decks like Valakut Ramp is seen to rise back in popularity, we can’t deny that there are other decks waiting to be discovered and polished to fit in the new metagame. I had been pondering a build for the big Red Metalcraft-based deck for Standard. We were able to purchase a set of Kuldotha Phoenix in Singapore, so my intentions on brainstorming the list arisen again. The deck’s basic strategy is to ramp up with “stones” (chalices and sun spheres) to cast the big spells while building up Metalcraft. Continue reading
