If you’re heading into a Magic: the Gathering Edge of Eternities draft and see the white-black Orzhov cards floating your way, you might just be sitting on one of the most reliable paths to victory in the set. Orzhov isn’t flashy at first glance—no massive haymakers that scream “game over” the moment they hit the battlefield—but that’s exactly what makes it so deadly. This archetype thrives on subtle, grinding efficiency, wearing opponents down until they have no good plays left and every turn feels like quicksand.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display:inline-block;
	min-width:100px;
	max-width:970px;
	width:100%;
	height:200px" data-ad-client="ca-pub-2323336148464359" data-ad-slot="7353149719"></ins>

Drafting Orzhov in Edge of Eternities is all about leaning into its signature game plan: grindy value backed by efficient removal and incremental life gain. As a competitive player, I approach this color pair with a focus on staying alive early, controlling the board midgame, and pulling ahead through card advantage and synergy. Orzhov in this set rewards patient, disciplined play—it’s not here to win in a flurry of aggression, but to choke the opponent’s resources and stabilize into inevitability.

1. Prioritize Premium Removal Early

In Edge of Eternities, Orzhov has access to some of the best removal in the format, including unconditional kill spells and efficient exile effects. I draft these highly, even over some solid creatures, because removal is the backbone of Orzhov’s strategy. Having answers to bombs and evasive threats keeps you in the game until your own late-game cards can take over. If you don’t have enough removal, you risk losing to a single threat you can’t answer.

2. Lean Into Life Gain Synergies

One of Orzhov’s unique strengths in this set is its life gain payoff package. Cards that trigger extra effects when you gain life—whether it’s creating tokens, draining opponents, or drawing cards—can quickly turn small life swings into overwhelming board states. The trick is to draft a balance of life gain enablers and payoff cards so you’re not stuck with one without the other. In the right build, every combat step and incidental heal becomes a value engine.

3. Value Durable, Utility Creatures

Unlike aggressive decks that prioritize raw power, Orzhov thrives on creatures that provide value over time or impact the game when they enter the battlefield. Draft creatures with built-in lifelink, death triggers, or defensive stats that stall aggressive starts. In Edge of Eternities, some of the best Orzhov creatures are those that hold back early attackers while advancing your long-term plan, that is, forcing your opponent to commit more threats into your removal.

4. Play the Long Game With Card Advantage

Orzhov’s win condition often isn’t a single bomb, but an accumulation of small advantages that snowball over many turns. Cards that generate tokens, recur from the graveyard, or drain life each turn fit perfectly into this strategy. When drafting, I always aim for at least a couple of repeatable advantage engines—things that keep giving you value as the game drags on. Against slower decks, this lets you win without overextending into board wipes.

Drafting Orzhov in Edge of Eternities means embracing patience and resource management. You’re not racing to deal 20 damage as fast as possible—you’re wearing down your opponent’s options, locking up the board, and turning every life point and token into a step toward victory. In the right hands, Orzhov becomes one of the most frustrating archetypes to face, because it doesn’t just win—it smothers.

Thanks for reading!

There’s something magical—pun intended—about attending a Magic: the Gathering prerelease. From the moment I walked into the local game store, the air was buzzing with anticipation. Players were chatting about the new mechanics, trading guesses on which rares would define the Limited format, and eyeing the fresh promo packs with eager curiosity.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display:inline-block;
	min-width:100px;
	max-width:970px;

I arrived just minutes before the registration, signed in, received my prerelease kit, and found a quiet spot to crack open the packs. The crinkle of foil and scent of fresh cards never gets old.

The tournament organizer announced the 40-minute Sealed deck building time and started opening the PR kit. I took a few pics for my social media postings before the pack opening.

Deckbuilding is always a chaotic joy. As I spread out my pool, I noticed a decent curve in blue and red, along with a couple of bombs that immediately caught my eye. I spent the next 30 minutes fine-tuning a build that leaned hard into combat tricks and aggressive creatures, and also going into the long game with my best Rares. It’s always a bit of a puzzle—figuring out synergies, weighing mana base options, and deciding whether a risky splash is worth it. I sleeved up, heart pounding slightly from excitement and nerves.

The event’s ambiance was somewhat casual, so I set myself to play not too competitively while also avoiding simple game errors. My first match was against a probable store regular who, thankfully, was also friendly and talkative. We exchanged stories about past prereleases while trading attacks on the battlefield. My deck performed surprisingly well; the early pressure from my creatures overwhelmed his slower board development. I won that match 2–1.

The rest of the event was a rollercoaster. I won another match, lost one to a brutal flyer-heavy deck, and had a nail-biter win in the final round. But more than the wins or losses, it was the camaraderie that stood out. Everyone was there to enjoy the new set, discover interactions, and just have fun slinging spells. Between rounds, we shared Prerelease kit pack openings, debated flavor text, and swapped stories about misplays and lucky breaks.

By the end of the night, I was mentally exhausted but completely satisfied. I didn’t pull anything absurdly valuable, nor did I go undefeated, but that wasn’t the point. Prerelease events are about the shared joy of discovery and competition, and once again, Magic delivered.

Taking the bus home, I was already looking forward to brewing with the new cards—and, of course, the next prerelease.

The Magic: the Gathering Standard Artifact Affinity strategy gets a powerful new twist with the release of the Edge of Eternities set. Traditionally focused on swarming the board with low-cost artifacts and overwhelming the opponent early, this build now leans into a more resilient game plan.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display:inline-block;
	min-width:100px;
	max-width:970px;
	width:100%;
	height:200px" data-ad-client="ca-pub-2323336148464359" data-ad-slot="7353149719"></ins>

The inclusion of new card options from Edge of Eternities allows the deck to recycle its resources, turning previously cast artifacts into a steady stream of value. This changes the tempo of the deck—still fast when it needs to be, but now capable of sustaining pressure across longer matches without folding to board wipes or removal-heavy decks.

What makes this version stand out is its ability to seamlessly curve its aggression as you have more artifacts on your board. The natural synergy between cheap artifacts and the longer game of gaining board value (likely with free artifact creatures), setting the stage for the new Edge of Eternities cards to take over.

It’s no longer just about dumping your hand and hoping for the best; now there’s a plan for every phase of the game. This update makes Artifact Affinity less of a glass cannon and more of a threat that keeps coming back—forcing opponents to deal with the same threats more than once, often to their frustration.
