The Hobbit Prerelease in Iloilo City

The Hobbit Prerelease event last Saturday brought together MTG players eager to experience the new set and discover which cards could make an immediate impact in Limited. The atmosphere was competitive but friendly, with players discussing their pulls, comparing deck ideas, and preparing for their matches.

For me, the biggest challenge was figuring out how to turn my Prerelease kit available card pool into a deck that could consistently execute a game plan. While it’s exciting to pull some strong individual cards in a Prerelease, having a deck that follows a clear strategy usually takes precedence.

Why Sealed Deckbuilding Matters

Limited formats reward players who can identify the strongest interactions within their pool. Instead of simply putting every powerful card into the deck, I focused on building something with a reliable curve, enough interaction, and creatures that could consistently pressure my opponents.

Mana consistency was also important. A Prerelease deck cannot afford to stumble repeatedly because of an overly ambitious manabase. Keeping the deck focused allowed me to make better use of the cards I opened while giving me a better chance of executing my game plan every game.

Preparing for the Matches

Once the deck was finalized, the next step was to trust the build and focus on playing each game one turn at a time.

One of the things I enjoy about Prerelease events is that players are still discovering the cards. There is no perfect sideboard guide or established matchup chart telling you exactly what to expect. This makes reading the battlefield and recognizing unfamiliar interactions particularly important.

I made a conscious effort not to get too attached to my original plan. If my opponent threw me a curveball with an unexpected strategy, I had to be ready to tweak my moves and figure out whether to go on the offensive or play it safe and control the game.

Third, disciplined play made a difference. Rather than rushing decisions, I tried to evaluate attacks, blocks, available mana, and possible responses before committing to a line.

Magic: The Gathering® | Marvel’s Spider-Man Prerelease Guide

There’s something magical—pun intended—about attending a Magic: the Gathering prerelease. From the moment I walked into the local game store, the air was buzzing with anticipation. Players were chatting about the new mechanics, trading guesses on which rares would define the Limited format, and eyeing the fresh promo packs with eager curiosity.

I arrived just minutes before the registration, signed in, received my prerelease kit, and found a quiet spot to crack open the packs. The crinkle of foil and scent of fresh cards never gets old.

The tournament organizer announced the 40-minute Sealed deck building time and started opening the PR kit. I took a few pics for my social media postings before the pack opening.

Deckbuilding is always a chaotic joy. As I spread out my pool, I noticed a decent curve in blue and red, along with a couple of bombs that immediately caught my eye. I spent the next 30 minutes fine-tuning a build that leaned hard into combat tricks and aggressive creatures, and also going into the long game with my best Rares. It’s always a bit of a puzzle—figuring out synergies, weighing mana base options, and deciding whether a risky splash is worth it. I sleeved up, heart pounding slightly from excitement and nerves.

The event’s ambiance was somewhat casual, so I set myself to play not too competitively while also avoiding simple game errors. My first match was against a probable store regular who, thankfully, was also friendly and talkative. We exchanged stories about past prereleases while trading attacks on the battlefield. My deck performed surprisingly well; the early pressure from my creatures overwhelmed his slower board development. I won that match 2–1.

The rest of the event was a rollercoaster. I won another match, lost one to a brutal flyer-heavy deck, and had a nail-biter win in the final round. But more than the wins or losses, it was the camaraderie that stood out. Everyone was there to enjoy the new set, discover interactions, and just have fun slinging spells. Between rounds, we shared Prerelease kit pack openings, debated flavor text, and swapped stories about misplays and lucky breaks.

By the end of the night, I was mentally exhausted but completely satisfied. I didn’t pull anything absurdly valuable, nor did I go undefeated, but that wasn’t the point. Prerelease events are about the shared joy of discovery and competition, and once again, Magic delivered.

Taking the bus home, I was already looking forward to brewing with the new cards—and, of course, the next prerelease.

Going into the Friday Night prerelease for Tarkir: Dragonstorm, I mostly rode on nostalgia. The original Tarkir block left a strong impression—vibrant clans, wedge colors, and of course, dragons. With the return to the plane, I was hoping Wizards would strike a balance between familiar themes and something new for the players.

I visited this place, Elves and Espresso, for the first time and saw a unique and relaxing ambiance that is far from the usual LGS setting. The shop is half coffee and gaming store, and they had the only schedule of an in-store prerelease on a Friday night. The owner was friendly and accommodating and greeted me when I arrived. He allowed the players to choose their clans for the PR kits, and I decided Abzan. I believed in a Reddit post that this clan has a better seeded pack than the rest.

We started deck-building at 7:10 pm and my cracking the packs brought immediate excitement: clan-flavored cards were back, but the mechanics had evolved. The Abzan developed the Endure mechanic, a choice between spirit tokens or +1/+1 counters on your creatures. Once I got to play, it was clear the set was built for momentum but still maintained a long-game strategy. My deck, a Black-White-Green midrange build, curved into a few dragons surprisingly well thanks to a few mana support creatures that fixed the color and made sure you have your land drops.

Every round felt dynamic. I saw games in my creatures curve well, with a few spot removals to deal with opposing blockers. Some games went long enough for dragons to hit the board, and when they did, they took over.

The mix of pressure and payoff made for one of the most engaging prerelease experiences I’ve had in a while. The deck build I think is nothing special but I am happy to develop a three-color deck strategy again after a long while.  See below the video preview of my Abzan PR sealed deck.
