When many players first get into Magic: The Gathering, it is easy to assume that the most expensive cards automatically lead to the strongest decks. After all, powerful staples often carry high price tags and are frequently featured in competitive decklists.

However, one of the most important lessons I learned over the years is that a deck’s success depends less on the individual strength of its cards and more on how well those cards work together. A deck with strong synergy can often outperform a collection of expensive cards that lack a clear game plan.

Synergy is what gives a deck consistency and purpose. When each card contributes to the same strategy, every draw feels useful, and every play advances your position. A simple example is a deck built around creating creature tokens. Even if the individual cards are inexpensive, they become significantly stronger when combined with effects that boost all creatures, generate additional tokens, or reward having a wide board. The power comes not from a single card, but from the interaction between multiple cards working toward the same objective.

This lesson is especially valuable for budget players. Many expensive cards are powerful because they are flexible and can fit into numerous decks, but budget alternatives can often perform just as well when chosen for a specific strategy.

Instead of spending heavily on a few high-profile staples, players can focus on identifying cards that support their deck’s theme. A well-constructed synergy deck can maximize the value of every card slot and create game states that feel much stronger than the individual card prices would suggest.

Another advantage of prioritizing synergy is that it improves deckbuilding skills. Players who rely solely on expensive cards may overlook the importance of card interactions, mana curves, and win conditions. Building around synergy encourages deeper thinking about how cards complement one another and how a deck actually wins games. These skills remain valuable regardless of budget and often translate into better gameplay decisions during matches.

Looking back, some of my most enjoyable and successful decks were not the ones filled with the most expensive cards. They were the decks where every card had a purpose and contributed to a larger strategy.

Synergy creates consistency, rewards thoughtful deckbuilding, and allows budget players to compete beyond the limitations of their collections. In many cases, a deck built around a strong game plan will achieve far more than one built around a handful of costly cards with no clear connection to each other.
