The potential of aggro decks is still fluent after Theros enters Standard. That is because of a few of the preview cards supporting them. I think the two main courses of these decks are either to go Red with burn spell support or go White weenie with the new Glorious Anthem card. For today, I will discuss the latter.
First, let us check what potential White cards in Theros to use.
Chained to the Rocks – This one-mana Oblivion Ring would be for Boros route and style of aggro white deck because of the conditional Mountain requirement. Banisher Priest is your main option just in case.
Fabled Hero – he might be potentially heroic in the deck because of Double Strike, but he can’t protect itself from removal and the three mana cost is just expensive for the curve.
Favored Hoplite – he is a good one drop but he’s not as aggressive as a 1/2, unless you build the deck with spells to trigger Heroic.
Gods Willing – replacing Faith’s shield with an additional Scry is a good inclusion in a White weenie deck. A copy or two is okay.
Phalanx Leader – he is the best two drop of the deck so far, pumping your entire army with his Heroic trigger.
Soldier of the Pantheon – this new breed of Savannah Lions and much better, is of course an auto inclusion of a playset in the deck. It can block or bypass reckoners and resurgent voice all day, and the bonus gain life gets you always ahead of the race.
Spear of Heliod – the Glorious Anthem in a legendary form, and removal in one package. Two copies might be already good for the deck, though I think using a third one maximizes the chances on drawing it on your third turn.
With these cards that Theros offers, I’ve listed (again) another draft of what the White Weenie post-Theros would look like:
White Weenie by Mark Ian Alloso
Theros Standard
Main Deck
22 Plains
Creatures
3 Imposing Sovereign
4 Boros Elite
3 Dryad Militant
2 Judge’s Familiar
3 Banisher Priest
1 Frontline Medic
4 Boros Reckoner
2 Fiendslayer Paladin
4 Soldier of the Pantheon
4 Precinct Captain
Spells
2 Righteous Charge
1 Brave the Elements
2 Gods Willing
3 Spear of Heliod
The deck has thirteen one-drops to start very aggressive and efficient two drops with Precinct Captain and Imposing Sovereign. The latter helps the captain connect damage to trigger the Soldier token generation. A typical first three turns would look like this:
You removals in the deck are the three Banisher Priests and the pseudo-kill Spear of Heliod. The other best 3-drops I’ve added are the playset of Boros Reckoner, two Fiendslayer Paladin and a lone Frontline Medic. Also curving into three- mana are the three anthems and Righteous Charge. The charge can quickly end games after the early damage done by your one-drops, and can also be utilized in combat tricks.
To conclude, the meta is somewhat slowing down with the rotation of M13/Innistrad lands and Farseek and is replaced by these Scry lands. With that direction of Standard, I’d bet that White Weenie might hit a spot of one of the top decks in the format. We shall see in the coming weeks.
Until next post.
