With the imminent rotation in Standard in the next month, we must prepare ourselves especially our card pool of the possible decks once Khans of Tarkir and Fate Reforged goes out. We lose the clans and the fetchlands to help our mana fixing issues and will eventually rely on the current duals and painlands as a substitute. I personally liked Abzan to leave the format so we could give way for new decks to emerge and get a few underperforming cards into use.

The deck brewing spark has got me again and the first deck that I have thought of was Jund Midrange. To recall, I have been a fan of Jund since its Shards of Alara days and it even got me one notable Top 4 finish in the WMCQ last 2013. The deck’s compo that time was Thragtusk, Huntmaster of the Fells and Olivia Voldaren. My last pilot of that archetype was a Jund Monsters version for Theros and RTR Standard.

This time and just recently, the deck has been getting good results in Magic Online dailies and even in PTTQ and Champ qualifiers. I have decided to check on some possible card components and here are some of the notables.

Goblin Dark-Dwellers – it is a solid five-drop in itself with the Menace bonus but with its ‘flashback’ ETB effect that makes its card advantage very notable. It can re-cast most of the decent spot removals in the format like Ruinous Path and Kolaghan’s Command.

Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet – Rally might be out of Standard but this guy still works well with all your removals in the deck. His bonus Lifelink is relevant against Mono Red matchup which will surely plague the format right after the rotation.

Sylvan Advocate – this Elf is a good early beater and defense in itself and can still be relevant in the late game once you hit your sixth land. He can also bonus pump your manlands (Hissing Quagmire) in the process.

Chandra, Flamecaller – Your late game relies on this fiery planeswalker as she does multi-function in certain scenarios. For instance like wiping the board or drawing your cards. She is like the Red version of Elspeth, Sun’s Champion.

Let us cut the list for now as we wait for card previews from Shadows over Innistrad. Here is version one of the creature lineup for Jund Midrange in SOI.

2 Den Protector
2 Dragonlord Atarka
4 Goblin Dark-Dwellers
3 Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet
4 Sylvan Advocate

Stay tuned for Part 2 of this deck discussion. Thanks for reading and until next time.

Japan is now back in the pinnacle of Magic. This is after an all-Japanese Finals on the Sunday and last day of Pro Tour Battle for Zendikar (Milwaukee). The champion, Kazuyuki Takimura playing Abzan aggro, battled fellow countryman Ryoichi Tamada, which was piloting a straightforward Jeskai deck. It took a decider Game 5 wherein the board advantage were swinging back and forth to both players. It was then that Takimura outlasted his opponent with Abzan’s superstar Siege Rhino and took down the trophy and title of Champion of the Pro Tour.

Here is the winning decklist of Pro Tour Battle for Zendikar:

Maindeck
4 Shambling Vent
4 Flooded Strand

Hi all, here is a recent update of our build on Mono Black Vampires in Standard. For your info, Vampires has done pretty well in the recent Magic: The Gathering Worlds championship. It finished undefeated (6-0) on Day 1 of that event despite being less popular with only 4 players piloting the deck.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display:inline-block;
	min-width:100px;
	max-width:970px;
	width:100%;
	height:200px" data-ad-client="ca-pub-2323336148464359" data-ad-slot="7353149719"></ins>

The deck’s build varies mainly based on the meta. Well, we can say that today’s meta is still infested with variations of Jund which is still the best deck of choice. The deck will be adjusted to go anti to that. We’ve done a few playtests and tweaks to the list and here are my observations:

1. Mind Sludge on Turn 5 is mostly good game. It seems just every deck is devastated by this.

2. Evasion and life gain is very essential. This is achieved by your Nighthawks, Tendrils and Bloodwitch.

3. Malakir Bloodwitch is a bomb. Yeah well not that good in Jund but most decks with white, esp. Naya Lightsaber and Boros will literally have a bad time dealing with this vampire.

4. Mass removal should be in the sideboard. I’m referring to Marsh Casualties and Infest. The deck can control the post sideboard.

With these in mind, here’s our recent decklist for Mono Black Vampires:

Maindeck
3 Bloodghast
4 Vampire Hexmage
4 Vampire Nighthawk
4 Vampire Nocturnus
4 Malakir Bloodwitch
4 Gatekeeper of Malakir

2 Disfigure
3 Mind Sludge
4 Sign in Blood
4 Tendrils of Corruption

18 Swamp
4 Marsh Flats
2 Verdant Catacombs

Sideboard
4 Black Knight
4 Deathmark
2 Infest
2 Marsh Casualties
1 Mind Sludge
2 Rise from the Grave

We just have 6 fetches in order not to miss any land drops until turn 5 and to achieve an early sludge. The sideboard focused beating white and Naya decks with the set of Black Knights and Deathmarks. Also, Rise from the Grave is our twist which can be pretty good with Mind Sludge. I was thinking of fatties like Iona, Baneslayer, Sphinx of the Steel Wind, etc. Lol.

I hope this list inspires your build on the Mono Black Vampires. Until the next post if I ain’t busy.

Hi all, happy Friday! I hope your weekend will be productive in Mtg tournaments and other stuff. For this post, I’ll analyze the Black Red Blightning deck, one of the top decks in pre-Zendikar Standard. The deck suffered a lot on this rotation with the loss of its important components. We said goodbye to Demigod of Revenge, Figure of Destiny, Boggart Ram-Gang, Flame Javelin, and to the black red lands Auntie’s Hovel and Graven Cairns. The question now is: Is the deck still competitive enough in the new Standard? We’ll soon find out as Zendikar becomes legal on tournaments this weekend.

First, let’s take a look at my build of the Black Red Blightning deck before the rotation.

Maindeck
4 Boggart Ram-gang
4 Demigod of Revenge
4 Figure of Destiny
4 Goblin Outlander

4 Blightning
4 Flame Javelin
4 Lightning Bolt
4 Terminate
4 Volcanic Fallout

4 Auntie’s Hovel
4 Graven Cairns
4 Dragonskull Summit
12 Mountain

Sideboard
4 Anathemancer
3 Chaotic Backlash
3 Doomblade
3 Infest
2 Pithing Needle

The deck lost almost all of its creatures and a third of its mana fixers. Let us see what Zendikar cards we can use for the new build of the Black Red deck.

The Zendikar Red cards:

Burst Lightning – A Shock that gets a better late game, this can replace Flame Javelin’s slot although it’s not as good.

Chandra Ablaze – She gets a slot maybe in the sideboard.

Elemental Appeal – This pseudo-Blistering Firecat deals huge chunks of damage and gets better if kicked but I prefer the cheaper Ball Lightning. Maybe a copy or two of this in the main is enough.

Goblin Bushwhacker – This is more suited on a Goblin deck rather than on the black-red unless you’re running more creatures than burn spells.

Goblin Guide – Cheap cost with haste is good but giving the opponent land draws makes me reconsider this Goblin.

Goblin Ruinblaster – The new version of Avalanche Riders and is much better in my opinion. The bad thing is Anathemancer already took its place in dealing with non-basic lands.

Lavaball Trap – Effective against fetchlands and Harrow but the five mana you use for its trap condition should be spent on your big spells rather than wait.

Obsidian Fireheart – This has a good chance of a playset main deck. The drawback though is that it’s not haste and dies to a lot of spot removals today.

Unstable Footing – A good sideboard card but it just missed out Burrenton Forge-tender. Wizards would have added “and can’t gain life this turn.” to this.

On to the Zendikar black cards,

Disfigure – Black’s version of Shock, this can be sideboard for pro-Red guys like BFT but Standard doesn’t have one at the moment. Hooray!

Needlebite Trap – A good sideboard for decks with life gain. This will get a slot in my sideboard.

Sorin Markov – A copy or two of him on the sideboard against insane life gain scenarios.

Ravenous Trap – To deal with random graveyard shenanigans. I’m predicting reanimator with Iona decks.

The other cards worth mention,

Teetering Peaks – Additional pump and damage for your early beaters.

Piranha Marsh – If you’re running a pauper version or budget version of the deck.

With a quick look at the other previous sets and some random fixing and curving, here is my initial and untested list:

Maindeck
Lands
4 [ZEN] Akoum Refuge
4 [ZEN] Arid Mesa
4 [ALA] Crumbling Necropolis
10 [ZEN] Mountain
4 [M10] Dragonskull Summit

Creatures
4 [ARB] Anathemancer
4 [M10] Ball Lightning
4 [M10] Siege-Gang Commander
4 [CFX] Shambling Remains
4 [CFX] Hellspark Elemental

Spells
4 [ALA] Blightning
4 [ZEN] Burst Lightning
4 [ARB] Terminate
4 [M10] Lightning Bolt

As I have observed on the pre-Zendikar Standard testing tournaments at Magic-League, the dominating decks are Jund cascade and Three-color control decks. This made me consider having the Anathemancers in the main deck. Twelve black-red gold cards also means twelve mana fixers. The Arid Mesa is optional but is preferred.

My sideboard would look like this:

3 Deathmark to deal with Putrid Leeches and Baneslayer Angels,
4 Thought Hemorrhage for control and combo decks,
3 Fleshbag Marauder specifically for Wall of Denial as this card is a big problem of the deck,
2 Needlebite Trap maybe for control and life gain decks, and
3 Volcanic Fallout for token decks and random weenie horde.

This wraps up my take on the Black Red Blightning Burn deck in Zendikar Standard. You might want to test this in your local tourney so feel free to do so. Until the next post and you may have a fun-filled Mtg weekend.

Hey all. I hope you all had a good Magic: the Gathering Zendikar prerelease weekend opening your desired fetchlands, Planeswalkers and other good cards. I just felt bad because Saturday was also the day that the tropical storm Ondoy ravaged our nation’s capital Manila and the nearby provinces. Casualties and death are still increasing as of the moment and I hope those people affected get enough help to return their lives to normal.

Going back, we had around 20 players on the prerelease and its good because some of our friends got to play because of sponsorship. I guess they’re really gunning for those good rares.

My starting six packs got me a few good cards but no limited bomb. The only card worth mentioning is a Lotus Cobra. At first, it was really hard to build out the deck because of the card pool. I looked at black and red as my potential colors but it lacks support and I’m dying to use the cobra. So I checked my green pool again and saw that I had two Harrows for mana fixing. A few mana and card count calculations later, I made a deck with green as its main color and got red and black as secondary colors. Its pretty much looked like Jund aggro. Lol.

I forgot the actual list but the deck got early beatdown curve with 2 Vampire Lacerators, Cobra and Harrow for fixing and accelaration, Lavaball Trap in case of opponent horde, and spot removals like Hideous End, and Magma Rift. I only got this large wurm for the fatties slot and the rest are weenie beats/utility critters.

Here are the summary of the matches as far as I remembered.

Round 1 vs Esteed (Won 2-1) He was playing 5 color Allies. I got mana screwed on Game 1. Game 2 was almost a loss for me because of his Baloth that gets +4/+4 and trample for every landfall. A top decked Magma Rift saved me and overwhelmed his other creatures with a Savage Silhouetted lacerator. Got him on Game 3 with an aggro start and finished it off with a ping on the magma hound.

Round 2 vs JP (Lost 2-0) He was playing Bant color midrange. I got an aggressive start on both games but his tapper merfolk held the fort and that annoying crab milled my spot removals. His fliers finished me off.

Round 3 vs Gian (Won 2-1) He was playing Black White Blue. Game 1 was a favor for me as he mana flooded. He shouldn’t have kept the starting seven lands. Game 2 was quite a stall but I was drawing lands and got overwhelmed on the board. The deciding game was a battle of combat tricks. The second turn cobra and third turn Harrow got me ahead on the board but he was able to stabilize with much better critters. We were trading creatures right after that. I forgot what happened on the last turns but the one thing that mattered and killed him is the ping from the hound which he forgot.

Round 4 vs Oliver (Won 2-1) He was playing Green Blue Red. My start was faster than his on Games 1 and 3. He almost got me on game 1 with a kicked Rite of Replication on my creature, but I was able to deny it by casting Hideous End on the target. He was successful to do it again on Game 2 and I was not able to recover after that, in addition to drawing three straight lands. Game 3 was all about card utilization and I really learned a lot about being patient and playing the right spell at the right time.

Final record was 3-1 and got me three additional Zendikar cards. The rares were two planeswalkers (Sorin and Nessa) and a… I forgot the other one. Oh well, at least it was worth it. Our sponsored buddy JP got us an Arid Mesa and other tournament staple goodies.

Overall it was a fun fun fun pre release with good laughs and moments with the rest of Iloilo Mtg community. I’ll update with the pics as soon as Masyong got it uploaded. So until next time I guess. Time now to brew Zendikar.

Hey all. This is my third take on the possible decks in post Zendikar Standard metagame. Previously I’ve discussed about the Ally class in Zendikar and for this post we will go with the deck that may possibly give rise to Black to be a Tier 1 deck in Standard. I’m referring to the Mono black Vampires deck.

To recall, Magic 2010 core set has given us a hint on the Vampire tribe with Vampire Aristocrat and the mythic rare Vampire Nocturnus. Let us see what Zendikar vampires we could use for the deck. (Refer to the Zendikar spoilers for card info.)

Bloodghast – this Vampire Spirit has a high chance to be included in the deck because of its cheap summoning cost and recursion ability via Landfall.

Gatekeeper of Malakir – its comes-into-the-battlefield Edict effect is a good board advantage and can even deal with protection from black creatures like Great Stable Stag. It is another standard component of a Vampires deck.

Kalitas, Bloodchief of Ghet – high-costed but has a efficient body and a built-in creature kill. I could run a single copy of this for mascot purposes.

Malakir Bloodwitch – this recent spoiled Vampire which is included in the black intro pack is possible for curving the deck’s mana, taking the five-mana slot and is pretty powerful if you got out an early Vampire beats.

Vampire Hexmage – this vampire I think has no other great effect on the battlefield aside from the two power first strike and killing planeswalkers. Its a potential sideboard card.

Vampire Lacerator – the first-drop slot of the deck is given to this card and the lose life is a little drawback for the 2 damage it could deal each turn.

Vampire Nighthawk – three abilities for the cost of three mana is a good deal with this card and even negates the life lost on the lacerator.

My card choices are Bloodghast, Gatekeeper of Malakir, Vampire Lacerator and Vampire Nighthawk. Lets check out other possible Zendikar black card inclusions for the deck.

Blood Tribute – this is pretty good with the kicker but the six mana cost gives me second thoughts of including this on the deck. It could be good as a sideboard for life gain decks.

Disfigure – Black’s version of Shock. A good kill but is overpowered by Doom Blade.

Feast of Blood – another good kill and gains you life but the condition of at least two Vampires makes it less effective.

Hideous End – the additional cost for the 2 life loss is not enough for me to play this card. I’d still go with Doom Blade.

Quest for the Gravelord – this quest enchantment effectiveness may vary depending on the deck theme if you will go with more cheap creature beatdown. I personally want this on the main board against a lot of spot and mass removals in Standard.

Sorin Markov – If you want to pimp out your Vampires deck then you can include him in the main board but seriously he can get one or two slot main.

My choice of black spells for Zen are Disfigure, Quest for the Gravelord and Sorin Markov.

With these and a few components from M10, here is the initial build of Mono Black Vampires in Post Zendikar Standard. This was also based from my teammates card by card analysis.

Vampires

A potential post Zendikar Standard deck
Mainboard
4 Bloodghast
4 Gatekeeper of Malakir
4 Vampire Lacerator
4 Vampire Nighthawk
4 Vampire Nocturnus

4 Quest for the Gravelord
4 Duress
4 Tendrils of Corruption
4 Doom Blade

Lands
4 Verdant Catacombs (or any other fetch on a Swamp)
20 Swamp

Let me know what you think of my list. Hit the comments below. Suggestions, recommendations and rants are welcome.

Happy Friday all. Its been a while since my last quality post because of a messed mind set. Maybe its an effect of the awesomeness of card previews this week which confused me on which one to write first. Anyway, I better do this first before I loss the momentum.

The next prediction I will make on the post Zendikar decks in Standard would be the new breed of a tribe deck or rather a creature sub class. Yes, I’m talking about Zendikar’s Ally creatures. Since Zendikar’s theme focused on treasures, quests, and traps, these class of citizens in Zendikar adds up as an ally or allies to help in your adventures and achieving them. Lets take a look at a few Ally class creatures spoiled so far.

Kazandu Blademaster – this Human Soldier Ally is the best two drop so far in the Ally class. It acts as a pseudo-White Knight and gets bigger for every other Ally you play.

Kabira Evangel – this Cleric Ally can be a support if you go for an alpha strike against a mono color opponent. Its much better played as a follow up for a second turn Blademaster.

Bala Ged Thief – the first spoiled Ally creature for black. His comes-into-the-battlefield Coercion ability is impressive but its too dependent. Plus the high cost of four mana makes me think twice of playing this on main board.

Kazuul Warlord – Red’s first Ally creature spoiled. He’s too costly to play for an aggro deck and its pretty strange for a Warrior to give pump counters. If this can get good red Allies then probably it will see play.

Murasa Pyromancer – For six mana you get to ping some creatures with this pyromancer Ally but I’d rather spent it on burn spells. Still playable in limited though if you managed to pick alot of Allies.

Oran-Rief Survivalist – He could fill up the two-drops slot in your deck together with the blademaster. A Green White Ally deck would look good.

Sea Gate Loremaster – Blue’s Ally class creatures would mostly be composed of Merfolks. A five mana card drawer is good in Limited but I doubt if it will be in Standard.

Turntimber Ranger – the best Ally so far is offered by Green via this Elf Ally. Not only that you gain board advantage with a wolf token for each ally played but also you this guy bigger to lead on beating your opponent.

Still a half more to go for the Zendikar spoiler to be complete so I’d expect to see more playable Allies to use. My conclusion for a good Ally deck will go with White and Green or White and Red. I personally favor Red to have more good Allies but I think they only offer the best Goblin guides. Lol. (that was based on the latest mtg webcomic)

These will be all for now. I’ll come up with the decklist once the set is complete. For the meantime, let me hear your thoughts on the impact of the Allies in the future Standard. Hit the comments and see ya on the next post.

The Standard rotation is drawing near. We will be saying goodbye to our Lorwyn tribe buddies, specifically the aggressive kithkins, the gentle Treefolks, the fiery Elementals, the Elves and the ever hated tribe that ruled most of the Standard, the Faeries. At this time, I’m guessing you are already predicting and preparing for the decks after the rotation. Most will probably stick with the decks from the Shards block or try the mono color theme Zendikar offers.

My post today will focus on my assumptions on the look of the Naya Aggro deck in post-Zendikar Standard. I based these on the current number of Zendikar cards spoiled. For reference, the current Naya Aggro deck in Standard would look like this:

Naya Aggro
by Cole Griffith
Mainboard
4 Fire-Lit Thicket
5 Mountain
5 Plains
4 Rootbound Crag
4 Sunpetal Grove
2 Wooded Bastion

4 Bloodbraid Elf
4 Figure of Destiny
4 Great Sable Stag
4 Ranger of Eos
4 Wild Nacatl
4 Woolly Thoctar

4 Lightning Bolt
4 Path to Exile
4 Volcanic Fallout

Sideboard
2 Burrenton Forge-Tender
4 Ethersworn Canonist
2 Gaddock Teeg
3 Harm’s Way
4 Stillmoon Cavalier

This deck won’t be heavily affected by the rotation (it will only loose FOD and the filter lands) but let’s see what Zendikar has to offer to improve this deck.

White Cards – Probably it will just be Day of Judgement at the moment since White has a few previews. Luminarch Ascension can also be an option in sideboard against control and Kor Sanctifiers to dispell random artifacts and enchantments.

Red Cards – The current options here are Goblin Guide and Plated Geopede. The goblin can be fetched via the Eos ranger and act as a pseudo-Spark Elemental with its Haste. I looked at Plated Geopede as a sleeper card like Putrid Leech and its a good option when combined with Zendikar’s enemy fetchlands, which the deck would probably use. Another worth mention is Goblin Ruinblaster which can be a sideboard for control.

Green Cards – The current spoiled Green cards would offer Scythe Tiger which I don’t really like because of the land sacrifice, and Harrow. Yes, it can be an option too and looks cool to combine with the geopede since its an instant.

Fetch Lands – The deck would use Arid Mesa (Red/White) for mana fixing.

With these cards stated, my initial build of Naya Aggro in post Zendikar would be this:

Naya Aggro
Potential Post Zendikar Standard deck
Mainboard
4 Bloodbraid Elf
4 Goblin Guide
4 Great Sable Stag
4 Ranger of Eos
4 Wild Nacatl
4 Woolly Thoctar

4 Lightning Bolt
4 Path to Exile
2 Naya charm
2 Ajani Vengeant

4 Rootbound Crag
4 Sunpetal Grove
4 Arid Mesa
4 Mountain
4 Plains
4 Forest

The sideboard will probably have these cards:
2 Ajani Vengeant
3 Celestial Purge
3 Day of Judgment
3 Dauntless Escort
3 Kor Sanctifiers
1 Naya Charm

Comments and suggestion are welcome so just hit the comments. I will do an update on this once the spoiler is complete. See you next time and thanks for reading.

Hey all. I hope you had a fun weekend. I’m sure you are all excited to see the start of the Zendikar previews today. There was quite a lot added today in the visual spoiler as well the card previews from today’s articles (we gotta thank them because despite the Labor Day holiday, they still went with the previews). Anyway in case you haven’t heard, fetchlands are back in Zendikar. This time its with the enemy colors. Check out Arid Mesa:

Yep, its really back which means more money spend in this upcoming set and its really worth it to buy booster boxes (which we are also planning).

Aside from that, the visual spoiler was also updated with the rest of the textless basic lands. See the eye candies below.

Zendikar Prerelease will be on Sept. 26 to 27, about three weeks from now. Can’t wait for it.

You might be curious about the title, but today’s Zendikar previews proved my post title above and you will be happily swinging with your Goblin friends again. First, let’s do a recap.

I remembered my early days of playing Magic wherein I first gazed upon the Goblin deck in Standard at the time of Tempest and Urza block. That deck featured powerful Goblin cards, a couple of burn spells, and fueled late game with the insane artifact named Cursed Scroll. I’m sure you’ll remember this particular Goblin which was also popular in Legacy and was even banned at one time. Yep, I’m talking about this card:

This card has been wrecking havoc in tournaments since it was printed and guess what, Wizards has been kind (or crazy?) enough to print back its big bro. Check out Evan Erwin’s final preview of the goblin Warren Instigator.

You might say now that’s a really insane card, putting not one but two Goblin cards into the battlefield with its Double Striking ability. Good thing I’ve got a set of Goblin Chieftains to work with this guy. This may have the hype attention right now but without the support of other goblins in Zendikar, it might be not as powerful as it looks. I just wish Chameleon Colossus is still in Standard this October. Lol.

Bonus: Check out this another Goblin Preview.

Goblin Ruinblaster, 2R
Creature – Goblin Shaman, Uncommon
Haste
Kicker R
When Goblin Ruinblaster enters the Battlefield, if it was kicked, destroy target non-basic land.
2/1

Now that’s Avalanche Riders version 2 for you, minus the Echo cost, and ready to blast those Alara trilands and M10 duals.

I’ll be updating my Black Red Goblins with these two and will do a few adjustments. Also expected to see more Goblins in Zendikar. Thanks Wizards!
