My post today is sort of a short recap of the basic deck archetypes in Standard Magic: the Gathering. This can also be applied in other formats but our focus now is to update you guys of the recent metagame in Khans of Tarkir Standard. This is part one of a short blog series and let us start with the Aggro decks.
For a short info of this archetype, Aggro is the short form for ‘aggressive’. Decks belonging to this category are therefore known as being aggressive. Their major aim is to terminate the life of your opponent as quick as possible. They aim at reducing your opponent’s life from 20 to zero.
You don’t use Aggro decks for long term purposes in the game. They prefer tempo-based race rather than card advantage-based attrition game. The decks convert their cards into damaging elements aimed at dealing with your opponent. The aggro decks are good at overpowering unprepared opponents and also remain unruffled in the game as well. They can inhibit your opponent’s ability to respond well in the game.
The current aggro decks in the Khans of Tarkir Standard metagame are comprised of Mono Goblin Rabblemaster Red, Red Green Aggro or its Monsters cousin, Red White Aggro (Sam Black’s World Championships deck) and Mono Green Devotion. There are also second-tier decks like Mono Black Devotion, White Weenie and White Black Warriors.
Pseudo aggro decks are also present in Jeskai Tempo/Burn, White Blue Heroics and Mono Blue Robots (Ensoul Artifact).
That’s a wrap for Standard Aggro decks. On Part two, we will tackle the deck archetype that’s between Aggro and Control: the Midrange decks.
Until the next post.
