M15 Card Discussion: Aggressive Mining

The Magic 2015 Coreset Card Image Gallery will be completed later today and basing from MtG Salvation’s current card count, I think the rest of the cards in the set will mostly compose of fillers and cards that are just averagely playable for Draft. Anyhow, I am still excited to play the set on Sealed next month and so to compensate, here are some more card previews and reviews. Our card feature for this post is Aggressive Mining.

Initial thoughts of this card is that it will fit as a card draw slot in Red Green ramp decks with cards like Font of Fertility to fetch your lands. The current version of Red Green already looks stable with card advantage via Domri Rade and Courser of Kruphix, though at times there would be awkward situations of not getting the creature or land on the top. A draft of the deck with Aggressive Mining would look like this one:

Creatures
4 Courser of Kruphix
3 Elvish Mystic
2 Ghor-clan Rampager
4 Polukranos
4 Stormbreathe Dragon
4 Sylvan Caryatid
1 Soul of Shandalar
1 Soul of Zendikar

Other spells
2 Aggressive Mining
2 Font of Fertility
1 Chandra, Pyromaster
3 Domri Rade
4 Mizzium Mortars
2 Xenagos, the Reveler

Courser of Kruphix works well here to bypass the ‘can’t play lands’ ability. I have cut one Domri Rade as we had added more noncreature spells and Aggressive Mining as the replacement card advantage. The two copies of Font of Fertility filters your land draws in the late turns, which also reminded me of Farseek from last year’s Standard.

Aggressive Mining’s minimal use would be on the sideboard against control decks. A late game draw of this card lets you convert your pile of lands into drawing your threats or even a direct lethal burn spell.

Is this card viable in the coming Standard format after M15? Let me know what you think. Comment below and let us discuss more of this card’s applications.

Thanks for reading, and until the next blog post.
