Herbert, Fiona and I recently gathered at Fiona’s place to playtest on building the Magic Origins sealed pool. We took the booster packs from their Prerelease kits and a few from my prize packs and group them so that each of us have six boosters. We then have to build a 40-card deck out of those cards.
My optimal build from my pool is a Black White Midrange deck that is consists of high-cost late game critters along with five spot removals and a board sweep, Tragic Arrogance. It also have high toughness and deathtouch small creatures to hold off the opponents’ early assault.
Herbert’s card pool was optimized on Red and White Aggro with Thopter generators and a late game bomb in Gideon’s Phalanx. Fiona’s build was Green and White, also on the aggro route. She had a good set of White critters and has a mini-combo in the deck with Zendikar’s Roil and Sword of the Animist.
We tested a few games against each other and Fiona’s G/W stand out with the most wins. I had a hard time stopping her assault with my slow spot removal spells and I was just able to snatch a win with a top deck card, one of which was a drawn Might Leap to get past her blockers for a lethal attack.
Here are the pictures I took during that playtest session.
Part 3 will be this coming Sunday and hopefully Oliver will be around to join us. I’d like know his insights on building a Magic Origins sealed deck.
