I have posted before that the high attendance of the local tournaments is good thing for the community. That means players are enjoy being competitive and piloting various decks in the Standard format. The next question though is what decks are truly outstanding in the metagame. We look at the recent MTG Iloilo tournament results and here they are below.
Friday Night Magic (20 players)
March 8, 2019
Top 4:
1st, Ace ( Grixis Midrange)
2nd, Tonton (Selesnya Tokens)
3rd, Floyd (Esper Control)
4th, JD (Mono Blue Tempo)
Standard Showdown (20 players)
March 9, 2019
Top 4:
1st, Nathaniel ( Selesnya Tokens)
2nd, Ace (Sultai Krassis)
3rd, Thomas (Gates Control)
4th, PR Melo (Gates Reclamation)
It was observed that there was still a variance of decks that finished in the top ranks. I had expected Mono Blue Tempo to be dominant because of the recent Mythic Champs but it seemed that the players were already prepared to combat it. There were several card components that counters the relevant cards of the deck archetype, such as the Kraul Harpooner for the Flying creatures.
Overall, I think the variance in the deck will continue as the players try to experiment new builds and upgrade existing ones. As for myself, we are already having a new deck to try supposedly yesterday but due to the busy schedule I was not able to play it. Anyhow, it is important that the players enjoy the format. Don’t you agree?
Until the next blog post.
