Magic Iloilo Tourney Weekend Recap (4th Week)

MtG-Iloilo-Tourney-Weekend-Recap-(4th-Week)

Last weekend was the second week of Origins-legal Standard. The local Magic Iloilo community’s players have somewhat acquired the new card components to use in their decks as most of their preorders have arrived. New archetypes have been spotted along with the updated versions of the Tier 1 decks.

Last Friday’s (July 24) attendance was 18 players, the second-highest count since the Magic Origins Release party. The FNM Promo foil prize might be the main reason. It was still four rounds and the matches to get into and finish Top 4 were quite intense. Here are the Top 4 players after those rounds:

1st, Mark Ian (Green White Collected Company)
2nd, Eric (Jeskai Midrange)
3rd, Rei (Bant Heroics)
4th, Tonton (Green Red Thopters)

I played the G/W Collected Company deck that my teammate Jason piloted on the previous week and changed the cards Wingmate Roc and Brimaz into Whisperwood Elementals. I have also adjusted some cards on the sideboard. I started the rounds 2-0, defeating Abzan Control and GR Thopters. My third-round opponent was Eric’s Jeskai Midrange and the grindy Game 1 match took most of our round time. I was able to aggro him fast in Game 2, only to find out we had just a minute left as we started our decider match. We ended up as a draw. Rei then conceded to our match in the final round and so it got me into 10 points and finished 1st place.

Saturday Standard (July 25) tournament got only 10 players in attendance, as it was just a regular event. I didn’t even join as I had a few errands to finish on that day. Here are the Top 4 finishers of the tournament:

1st, Tonton (White Red Heroic)
2nd, Rei (Bant Heroic)
3rd, Franco (Mono Red)
4th, Mark T. (Blue Black Control)

I predict this high number of attendees will continue until the next month as August’s FNM Promo foil card is very worth it.

That’s a wrap for this week’s MtG Iloilo tournament summary, until the next post.
