MTG Standard Izzet Spells Gets an Upgrade with Invoke Calamity

Time and again, Izzet decks still get the love from the new cards in the upcoming Magic: the Gathering Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty set. This time let you recast instants and sorcery spells from your graveyard for free. A huge sigh.

The card is called Invoke Calamity.

You may cast up to two instant and/or sorcery spells with total mana value 6 or less from your graveyard and/or hand without paying their mana costs. If those spells would be put into your graveyard, exile them instead. Exile Invoke Calamity.

This card also comes in a Kamigawa Neon frame version which is more visualized especially in foil.

For four mana, you get two cards to recast or much more value if one of those cards gets you to copy another spell on the stack. Izzet is packed with those and looking at the list of the Epiphany decks prior to its banning,

Cards like Galvanic Iteration played prior to Invoke Calamity will surely result in a blowout of spells that depending on the situation of direct burn spells might deal enough damage to put the opponent’s life to zero. This opens the option for a straightforward burn-to-the-dome strategy with the setup of card draws and counterspells for the sideboard.

Looking at the current Standard, there ain’t many Lava Axe-like effects. We have similar high-value cards like Lorehold Command, which I think can suffice with the main strategy of just burning them out. We still have the option to go with the Goldspan Dragon plan, flying in 4 damage at a turn while stopping them from developing their board. You can also have options on planeswalkers like Rowan, Scholar of Sparks which makes your Instant and sorcery spells cost 1 less to cast.

Anywho, we will come up with the decklist once the complete Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty card spoiler set is out. We are still open to options to add a third color to be more open to other dual-color spells in the format.

That is a wrap, for now, thanks for reading up to this part and until the next blog post.
