The Best Endgames for Standard Control Decks

While checking on Magic: the Gathering news and the recent stuff on this card game, I have stumbled upon one discussion post on Reddit Spikes where the author asked what are the best endgame gameplay for Azorious and Dimir Control decks. We know that the current control decks in Standard do what they do best: controlling the board until it draws its win condition.

The recent deck strategy and build, however, adopted the Learn mechanic in some of its spells where it can fetch a Lesson card on the sideboard. The best Lesson card choice here is Mascot Exhibition where the three generated Tokens can just pick off opponents’ life total while they struggle to put up their defense. It mostly caught them off guard when you wipe out their initial assault with removals and counterspells.

Others rely on the traditional Planeswalker gameplan though most spells nowadays have an instant answer to them. Dimir mirror matches also maindeck’s Duresses so holding on to them might be a wrong move in the late game.

One responder suggested that Xanathar, Guild Kingpin is the best for Dimir and Esper Control decks. It can basically lock out opponents and gain a card advantage from the top card of their library.

The other card choices are Manlands (i.e. Hall of Storm Giants), Bird tokens from the Epiphany, and other token generating effects such as Felidar Retreat.

With the coming of Innistrad: Crimson Vow, I am pretty sure there will be new card components that these control deck archetypes can benefit from. We will check on those once the spoiler season starts.

That is a wrap, until the next blog post. Thanks for reading.
