Last Wednesday was another scheduled Standard Pauper night for the new players, though the participants were the same ol’ peeps. The Carbo brothers were there again to support the event but two of their friends again
(that was attendees of the first Pauper tournament) were not able to play.
The other players were me and my teammate Arthur and also present was Nonoy Sia. Good thing Pauline was there at that time so I just lent her my White Tokens deck so that she could also play. It was a total of eight players so that means a three-round Standard Pauper tournament. We also agreed beforehand that there will be no Heroic decks for this tournament so I was expecting some innovations and deck techs from the group.
I gave my Grixis Control list another shot and here is how I went:
Round 1 vs Allen (Blue Red Control) Won 2-0
Round 2 vs Arthur (Mono Red) Lost 0-2
Round 3 vs Christian (Blue Red Control) Won 2-0
The two matchups with the Izzet control decks from the Carbo brothers were more like setting up with the most mana and casting card drawers while waiting for the opponent to tap out for a threat. It was mostly a grindy game but the good thing is I could pull off the win because I have more card drawers than them and I somewhat adjusted my sideboard by having more Hexproof threats.
My final record was 2-1 and I got the third rank place. No booster packs for me but I am happy that Arthur got first place and as a bonus, we opened a Thunderbreak Regent from the prize booster.
Tomorrow will be another Standard Pauper night for the MtG Iloilo community and I am hoping that the previous players can come and join. I prepared a new deck to play and hoping it will turn out well based on the metagame last week. I guess I had to put more effort into promoting the event on Facebook.
