The tribal creature deck archetype has always been a compelling strategy in Magic: The Gathering (MTG) due to its synergy-driven gameplay and thematic cohesion. In the current Standard format, tribal decks remain a viable option, with their potential depending heavily on the available card pool and the strength of tribal-specific support cards.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display:inline-block;
	min-width:100px;
	max-width:970px;
	width:100%;
	height:200px" data-ad-client="ca-pub-2323336148464359" data-ad-slot="7353149719"></ins>

Tribes like Soldiers, Vampires, Elves, and Goblins, among others, are prominent in MTG’s history, and recent sets have introduced new cards that bolster tribal mechanics.

The deck archetype thrives when a tribe has strong lord effects (creatures or spells that buff all members of the tribe), efficient curve fillers, and synergistic enablers, making it a force to be reckoned with under the right conditions.

One major strength of tribal decks in Standard is their inherent synergy. By focusing on a single creature type, players can maximize the value of cards that specifically reward tribal consistency. For instance, cards like Recruitment Officer and Valiant Veteran in Soldier decks or Elvish Archdruid in Elves decks provide both power and utility while synergizing with the broader tribe.

These synergies often create board states where creatures are more powerful than their mana costs suggest, allowing tribal decks to compete effectively against slower control or midrange strategies. Additionally, tribal decks tend to snowball in power, meaning that unanswered early threats can quickly overwhelm an opponent.

Another critical factor that enhances the potential of tribal decks in Standard is the availability of multi-tribal support and mana fixing. Cards that provide generic buffs, like Invasion of Gobakhan and the upcoming Lifecraft Engine from Aetherdrift, can supplement tribal decks while improving their flexibility. Furthermore, the Standard card pool often includes dual or tri-colored mana bases that enable multi-tribe archetypes. This flexibility allows decks like Humans or Soldiers to incorporate off-tribe tech cards while maintaining consistent mana. In contrast, tribal decks that lack strong mana fixing may struggle to compete, as they often rely on aggressive curves that cannot afford tempo losses.

Ultimately, the potential of tribal creature decks in Standard depends on their ability to adapt to the evolving metagame. When supported by efficient tribal payoffs, synergistic enablers, and resilient strategies, tribal decks can be a formidable archetype capable of dominating tournaments. However, success requires players to navigate the format’s inherent risks, including removal-heavy decks and diverse archetypes that challenge tribal synergy. As new sets continue to introduce powerful tribal cards, the archetype will remain a dynamic and exciting part of Standard, appealing to players who enjoy thematic, synergy-driven gameplay.

The current top-tier Magic: the Gathering Standard format metagame goes with adjustments on the existing deck archetypes and with uses of the best cards from the recent Outlaws in Thunder Junction set. It also goes well that playtesting against these different decks would help in strategizing the gameplay and making the best way possible to win the matchup.

MTG Arena is the best platform for that as easy access and support are possible for most players who cannot do playtesting in the actual or drop by their local game store.

The deck matchup highlighted today in a featured video upload is Domain Control going up against Mono-Red Prowess. We knew that Mono-Red got a huge upgrade from OTJ with Slickshot Show-Off which can attack for huge chunks of damage off playing noncreature spells. Domain Control, on the other side, has also made changes in the maindeck build and list to deal with the current metagame such as having more spot removals in support to board sweep cards like Sunfall.

Do check out the YouTube video gameplay below.

Brewing for the upcoming new Magic: the Gathering set has been my usual routine, especially with sets that got my interest or hype going. I felt the same when Outlaws of Thunder Junction was released. Seeing the “crime” mechanic has somewhat got me into a good think tank of what cards would synergize perfectly. The safe route though is to check out the existing decks and see any new cards that will fit into it. Hence, today’s blog post is about that.

The Standard deck that I will highlight today is the Rakdos Anvil build. It has come down to a lower tier recently because of the predominant use of Temporary Lockdowns which made it collateral damage. Anywho, I think the deck will still perform well with the new Outlaws of Thunder Junction – Big Score special card added. That is the Legion Extruder, and the card preview below.

I have come up with the decklist and video discussion below, uploaded to my YouTube Channel Deathmarked TV.

“Solar Flare” was a control deck in Magic: the Gathering that was prominent during the Innistrad block (2011-2012 Standard format). The deck utilized a combination of powerful control elements, creature removal, and graveyard recursion and revolved around Blue, Black, and White colors.. The deck’s name is derived from the card “Sun Titan,” which could bring back other creatures from the graveyard when it entered the battlefield.

<ins class="adsbygoogle"

The key components of the Solar Flare deck included the following:

Control Elements: Cards like “Mana Leak” and “Forbidden Alchemy” were used to control the opponent’s spells and dig for key cards.

Removal Spells: Efficient removal spells like “Doom Blade” or “Go for the Throat” helped deal with opponent creatures, along with some mass removal spells such as Wrath of God and Damnation.

Graveyard Interaction: The deck often included cards that benefited from or interacted with the graveyard. “Unburial Rites” was a crucial card, allowing the player to reanimate a powerful creature from the graveyard.

Card Advantage: The deck aimed to generate card advantage through cards like “Think Twice” and “Snapcaster Mage,” allowing players to reuse spells.

Finishers: The deck typically had powerful finishers, such as “Sun Titan” or “Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite,” which could dominate the battlefield and close out the game.

The Magic: The Gathering deck archetype later on adapted the name Esper Control with the release of the Shards of Alara set. Esper depicts the same three-color combination for this deck build.

The Pioneer Azorius is one of the preferred MTG decks in the format if you are going with some tempo-style deck strategy that caters to cheap, flashy creatures and counterspells that prevent opponents from developing their board.
Creating a sideboard plan for an Azorius Spirits Aggro deck in Pioneer involves preparing for a variety of matchups and adapting to the metagame. Here’s a sample sideboard plan that you can use as a starting point.

Keep in mind that you may need to adjust it based on your local metagame and personal preferences.

Against Aggro Decks (e.g., Mono-Red Aggro, Humans, Mono Black Aggro):

2-3 Portable Hole – Fend off the early aggressive aggro curve.

1 Rest in Peace: To shut down graveyard-based strategies and recurring creatures.

Skyclave Apparition – A creature that can exile an opponent’s creatures while also providing a good blocker.

Spell Queller: For additional counterspells and creature flying threat.

Extraction Specialist – three-drop lifelinker that can also return your creature card that has died in the early turns.

Remember, sideboarding is highly dependent on the specific decks you expect to face in your local metagame. Always pay attention to the evolving metagame and adapt your sideboard plan accordingly. Additionally, practice and experience will help you fine-tune your sideboarding choices for Azorius Spirits in Pioneer.

The deck name is Cyclone Surge, and it is a Magic: the Gathering deck built around the Cycling mechanic. Cycling is a versatile ability that allows you to pay a certain cost to discard a card from your hand and draw a new card. This deck focuses on exploiting the Cycling mechanic to create a fluid and adaptive playstyle, enabling you to dig through your deck quickly, find answers to various situations, and maintain a steady flow of resources.

<ins class="adsbygoogle"
   style="display:inline-block;

In the past, we had several relevant deck builds that gained an advantage from cycling and one of which was during the Onslaught set. The deck was Red-White Astral Slide and became a contender deck in that time of the Standard format.

Main Mechanics:

Cycling: The heart of this deck is the Cycling ability. Most cards in the deck will have Cycling, allowing you to cycle them away when they’re not immediately useful, ensuring you never get stuck with dead cards in your hand.

Payoffs for Cycling: Many cards in the Cyclone Surge deck will provide additional benefits when you cycle them. These could include drawing extra cards, dealing damage to opponents, gaining life, or other advantageous effects.

Key Cards:

Archfiend of Ifnir: This card rewards you for cycling by placing -1/-1 counters on creatures your opponents control. This can significantly weaken their board while you continue to cycle through your deck.

Drake Haven: This enchantment rewards you with 2/2 flying Drake creature tokens whenever you cycle a card. It helps you build a board presence while cycling through your deck.

Flourishing Fox: A creature that gets a +1/+1 counter whenever you cycle a card. It starts small but can quickly grow into a formidable threat.

Shark Typhoon: This enchantment lets you cycle cards to create a 5/5 Shark creature token with flying. It also has the added bonus of giving you a versatile spell that can be cast for its cycling cost.

Zenith Flare: A powerful finisher that deals X damage to any target, where X is the number of cards Cycling in your graveyard. It rewards you for cycling and can potentially close out the game.

Decklist:

Creatures (18):

4x Flourishing Fox

4x Archfiend of Ifnir

3x Gempalm Polluter

3x Vile Manifestation

3x Nimble Obstructionist

Spells (18):

4x Boon of the Wish-Giver

4x Censor

4x Zenith Flare

3x Startling Development

2x Valiant Rescuer

Enchantments (4):

4x Drake Haven

2x Shark Typhoon

Lands (20):

4x Irrigated Farmland

4x Canyon Slough

4x Desert of the Mindful

4x Sheltered Thicket

4x Island

<ins class="adsbygoogle"
     style="display:inline-block;width:300px;height:250px"
     data-ad-client="ca-pub-2323336148464359"
     data-ad-slot="1416605407"></ins>

Playstyle:

The Cyclone Surge deck focuses on a dynamic play style. You want to cycle aggressively to dig through your deck, find your key pieces, and gain incremental advantages. Use cards like Flourishing Fox and Archfiend of Ifnir to apply pressure while disrupting your opponent’s plans. Drake Haven and Shark Typhoon help you build a board presence and generate flying threats.

Save your Zenith Flares for the right moment, whether it’s to finish off an opponent or remove a critical threat. Keep an eye on your graveyard to maximize the damage from Zenith Flare. Additionally, utilize cards like Censor to disrupt your opponents’ plays and maintain control of the game.

Remember that adaptability is key with this deck. You have the flexibility to cycle away cards that don’t suit the current situation and draw into answers that can turn the tide of the game in your favor.

Overall, the Cyclone Surge deck is all about embracing the Cycling mechanic to its fullest, maintaining a steady stream of card advantage, and outmaneuvering your opponents with versatile plays.

The MTG Blue Red (Izzet) Turns deck refers to a deck archetype in Magic: The Gathering that combines Blue and Red to create a strategy focused on taking extra turns and manipulating the game’s tempo. This archetype is commonly known as “Blue Red Turns” or “Time Warp” due to its reliance on cards that grant additional turns.

<ins class="adsbygoogle"
   style="display:inline-block;
	min-width:100px;
	max-width:970px;
	width:100%;
	height:200px"
   data-ad-client="ca-pub-2323336148464359"
   data-ad-slot="7353149719"></ins>

The Blue Red Turns deck aims to control the game and disrupt the opponent’s strategy by repeatedly taking extra turns while denying the opponent opportunities to act. This allows the deck to develop its board state, generate card advantage, and apply pressure over an extended period.

The deck typically includes cards that grant extra turns, such as “Time Warp,” “Temporal Mastery,” “Nexus of Fate,” and “Temporal Manipulation.” These spells allow you to skip the opponent’s turn and take multiple consecutive turns, gaining an advantage in terms of resources, board presence, and card advantage.

To support the time manipulation theme, Blue Red Turns decks often include cards that can manipulate the library or manipulate the top of the deck, popular old card staples such as “Brainstorm,” “Serum Visions,” or “Sensei’s Divining Top.” These cards help ensure the availability of extra turn spells and filter draws to find the desired pieces.

Control elements are also important in Blue Red Turns decks. Counterspells, removal spells, and disruption tools help protect the extra-turn spells and maintain control of the game. By denying the opponent’s key plays and protecting your game plan, you can create a favorable board state and secure victory. Adding a third color such as Black is also possible so as to access solid spot removals and discard spells to interact with your opponents’ gameplan before you take over the turns.

Overall, the Blue Red Turns deck offers a unique and strategic playstyle, leveraging the manipulation of time to gain an advantage over opponents. It requires careful planning, timing, and resource management to effectively control the game and utilize the extra turns to secure victory.

Here below is the Grixis version that we are working on that is enclosed in a Control strategy shell before pulling off the multiple turns with the Alchemist Gambit card. Do check out the gameplay below.

The MTG Orzhov deck refers to a deck archetype in Magic: The Gathering that focuses on the Orzhov guild, one of the ten guilds in Ravnica, one of the game’s multiverse planes. The Orzhov guild is associated with white and black mana and is known for its emphasis on wealth, power, and manipulating spirits and souls.

In the popular Magic: the Gathering formats, Orzhov decks typically combine elements of control, life gain, and token strategies. They often utilize a mix of efficient creatures, removal spells, and enchantments to establish board control and disrupt the opponent’s game plan.

Lifegain is a prominent theme in Orzhov decks, allowing them to outlast aggressive strategies and gain significant life totals to prolong the game and win from that advantage. This archetype frequently includes cards that provide lifelink in the form of enchantments and planeswalkers and just go wide in the mid game up to the late game with the best cards from these colors that they can access.

The video is one good example of a typical Orzhov midrange deck, and this one is for the Standard format. Do check out the match gameplay below.

Magic: the Gathering Combo decks are considered the third category of deck archetype strategies in the game. In the past, several combo pieces were banned due to their power level, and the consistency to win games instantly. One best example was the Splinter Twin deck.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display:inline-block;
	min-width:100px;
	max-width:970px;
	width:100%;
	height:200px" data-ad-client="ca-pub-2323336148464359" data-ad-slot="7353149719"></ins>

When facing a Combo deck in Magic: the Gathering, your sideboard plan should aim to disrupt their combo and slow down their game plan. Here are some general tips for side boarding against a Combo deck:

Add in disruption spells: Include cards like Counterspells, Negate Thoughtseize, or Duress to disrupt their combo pieces or their ability to assemble the combo. Game 1 is usually hard as these disruption spells are usually in the sideboard list. Hence, it is safe to add these cards at least one or two copies in the main if you are expecting many combo decks in your local tournament or event.

Add in cards that can remove key combo pieces: Look for cards that can specifically target and remove the key cards or combo pieces the opponent relies on to execute their combo. The best examples are Jester’s Cap and The Stone Brain.

Add in cards that can prevent or disrupt their strategy: Consider including cards that can shut down specific strategies or disrupt their game plan. For example, cards that prevent untapping or limit the number of spells they can cast per turn. Several combo disruption card examples are Rule of Law, Grafdigger’s Cage, and Authority of the Consuls.

Add in cards that provide graveyard hate: If the Combo deck relies on the graveyard for their combo in which these shenanigans are usually common even for midrange decks, include cards that can exile or disrupt their graveyard. Some example cards are Nihil Spellbomb and Rest in Peace.

In conclusion, sideboarding is a crucial aspect of competitive Magic: the Gathering, and having a well-prepared sideboard plan can greatly improve your chances of success against these combo deck strategies. Remember, understanding the key weaknesses of the opponent’s strategy and selecting the right cards to disrupt their game plan is essential.

Magic: the Gathering deck brewing is an ongoing process, as you will need to continue to refine your deck and make changes as you learn more about the format and your play style. It’s a great way to expand your knowledge of the game and have fun experimenting with new strategies and cards. In formats like Standard, the deck archetypes are continuously updated with every new set released and added to the format. They are the first inline to experience the gameplay, mechanics, and other new interactions of the set.

Today’s Standard deck on spotlight is Big Red. This is a Magic: The Gathering archetype that focuses on playing a lot of big, powerful creatures and direct damage spells to quickly close out the game. The recent build has adopted the large artifact creatures from Brother’s War as its main win conditions and some support cards that produce Powerstone tokens to ramp its mana.

Below is the video of the Standard deck discussion for Big Red Artifacts with ONE, and the new cards added were the newest version of Koth planeswalker, the Red Dominus, and a new nonbasic land.

The current Magic: the Gathering Standard format still revolves around the top-tier decks such as Izzet Epiphany, and Mono-White. That does not mean though that the other deck brews will not a good finish in the local tournaments or on Magic: the Gathering Arena. For today’s Standard deck feature, we have the archetype that caters and takes advantage of the traditional graveyard shenanigans.

While doing research on the Mono Red deck archetype for GRN Standard, I found out in a few of their builds that they are splashing White to utilize the Boros spot removals like Justice Strike, Conclave Tribunal and the legendary Tajic, Legion’s Edge. I have also found an old Boros build that is based on the RIX enchantment Path of Mettle. It got me interested again as I have recently bought two copies of the card from a Fire Sale of a fellow MTG player. I have also read on PV’s article about the card and did more research on reference lists. I did some build comparison of their brews to that of the top deck versions of the recent MTGO Competitive Standard league results and came up with the decklist below.

Creatures
4 Runaway Steam-Kin
4 Fanatical Firebrand
4 Goblin Chainwhirler
2 Tajic, Legion’s Edge
2 Relentless Raptor
4 Rigging Runner

Spells
2 Experimental Frenzy
2 Justice Strike
2 Heroic Reinforcements
3 Shock
3 Path of Mettle
4 Lightning Strike

Lands
2 Stone Quarry
13 Mountain
1 Plains
4 Clifftop Retreat
4 Sacred Foundry

Sideboard
1 Experimental Frenzy
2 Deafening Clarion
3 Lava Coil
2 Conclave Tribunal
2 Banefire
1 Justice Strike
3 Rekindling Phoenix
1 Dire Fleet Daredevil

Runaway Steam-Kin is the only creature in the deck that cannot trigger the Path of Mettle but it still be relevant enough to pressure opponents and do you more casting options with its mana. Experimental Frenzy is its best friend and your late game can be very explosive with the two. The two copies of Heroic Reinforcements auto trigger the Path and gets you deal lots of damage given that you’ve curved out your one and two drops.
The sideboard might not be final but the card choices might just be the right one to deal with the current metagame. Let me know what you think of this build by hitting the comments on the box below.

That is a wrap for today. Until the next blog post.
