Gatecrash Standard Decks: Orzhov Aggro

I somehow forgot to discuss this deck archetype. Since the metagame in Standard is now shifting to the aggro side, I think it’s best to discuss possibilities and deck potential. This list was referenced from a major tournament in Magic-league just before Gatecrash was prereleased.

I was looking on building another variety of the Zombies deck, with White as its second color. Good thing Orzhov is now out in Gatecrash so I got a bunch of options to include in the list.

Here is what I came up:

Orzhov Aggro
by Mark Ian Alloso
Lands
1 Cavern of Souls
10 Swamp
4 Orzhov Guildgate
1 Vault of the Archangel
4 Isolated Chapel
4 Godless Shrine

Creatures
4 Restoration Angel
4 Cartel Aristocrat
2 Blood Artist
2 Obzedat, Ghost Council
4 Gravecrawler
4 Diregraf Ghoul
4 Geralf’s Messenger

Spells
4 Orzhov Charm
1 Oblivion Ring
1 Sorin, Lord of Innistrad
4 Lingering Souls
2 Liliana of the Veil

Sideboard
2 Appetite for Brains
2 Beckon Apparition
3 Cathedral Sanctifier
1 Liliana of the Veil
2 Oblivion Ring
3 Frontline Medic
2 Vampire Nighthawk

The deck has the nature of Zombie resilience with a splash of blink. Orzhov Charm is the best removal in the set, as to consider dealing with the best creatures in the metagame. The loss of life is not that of the big deal, as you have Obzedat and Blood Artists for life gain. Lingering Souls can do both offense and defense, and also fodders to Cartel Aristocrat.

Resto Angel is not that impressive in the deck (only blinking messengers and ghost dad), but a flashy flying 3/4 can be considered for a four-drop. Liliana of the Veil & Sorin, Lord of Innistrad are you options against control, backed up by the sideboard Appetite for Brains and maybe additional Oblivion Rings.

Since aggro is now the choice of most people, I might have to update the sb a bit with Ultimate Price or maybe consider High Priest of Penance. We’ll see.

Until next post.
