Remembering the times when we were able to conduct Magic: the Gathering tournaments along with mall events and sponsored by the management, I am sharing today a throwback of an event back in August 2013. The event was Cosplayfest 2013 and was held in the fountain area of Robinson’s Place Iloilo in the city’s downtown.
This was a collaboration of the various hobby groups, hobby shops, and the Iloilo cosplayer community. This was to showcase their skills and talents in cosplaying various anime characters and compete them for awards and prizes by the Robinson admin. A big thanks to you Robinson’s Place.
As for our Magic: the Gathering tournament, we conducted a Standard event free of registration. That was within Ravnica-Theros sets and that time and our card pool were fully prepared to build ready all the decks for this event.
That tournament gathered about 50 participants and we were able to set enough Swiss rounds but the time constraints were encountered in the late rounds because of the intense matches such as between two control decks.
The mall hours caught up with us and so we then transferred to Rei’s place for the Top 8 matches. We just brought along the prizes that the mall has provided and later on provided pictures of the Top players as proof. I remember several Ravnica-based decks in the final Top 4, such as Gruul Aggro and Azorious Control. I forgot who got the first place but I think the Top 4 have already pre-decided to equally divide the prize money.
Overall, it was a good tournament experience given the free registration and the ready prize money, and freebies for the players. I do hope that once the pandemic has gone down that this kind of tournament will come back in the local Magic: the Gathering Iloilo scene.
