My Top Five Multi-Color Cards from The Brother’s War

The top cards from the recent Magic: the Gathering set The Brother’s War look primarily on its use not only in the basic Standard deck but also in older formats such as Pioneer, and Modern. The metagame might be a factor in this but I think it is plainly on the versatility such as the mana cost of the card. Also, maybe it’s the consideration of being a main deck card in a certain deck archetype.

Specially considered are those multi-color cards that I see to be a higher power level than the monocolored ones. Thus said, here are my Top Five Multi-Color Cards from The Brother’s War set.

Fifth – Third Path Iconoclast – This newest version of the Young Pyromancer but I think is more powerful because of the type of tokens it is producing. Freebie 1/1 Soldier Artifact creatures can not only gum up the board or form to slowly chip off opponents’ life totals but can also be relevant in triggering ETB effects. Some cards synergize with this trigger as it can also be beneficial such as Contraband Kingpin’s Scry ability, Dragonspark Reactor’s charge counters, and Glaze Fiend’s pump ability.

Fourth is Urza, Prince of Kroog. Urza pumping your Robot army? Sign me up! While the four mana cost is quite above average, it won’t really a difference if you are curving from Ornithopters to Frogmites and affinity for free. He is also a good mana sink for creating tokens of utility artifacts in your deck.

Thirds is Mishra, Tamer of Mak Fawa. This version of Mishra gets good use of your artifacts dumped in your graveyard. You can use cards like Faithless Looting and Fable of the Mirror Breaker’s 2nd Saga counter to discard those high-cost artifacts and then use Mishra’s passive ability to Unearth them later on. I am looking at the Standard version of the prototype creatures and Portal to Phyrexia’s edict effect to go with a sort-of a Rakdos Mishra Reanimator deck.

Second, on the list is Legion to Ashes. This is the newest variance of an exile effect on a non-land permanent but gets the benefit of also exiling token copies with the same name. Having trouble with a swarm of Human tokens from the Wedding Announcement? Here is your solution. The only drawback is the Sorcery speed but I won’t really mind for midrange decks like Esper utilize this card.

Last but first on the list is the set’s main character, Urza, Lord Protector. Still valued in the market at around 20usd, this card I see would make a staple midrange Artifact deck in Standard. Giving a discount to most of the spells and at the right mana curve would really fit in that build. Adding The Mightstone and Weakstone to the list gives you a chance to Meld into Urza, Planeswalker which is a game-ender move in most scenarios.

That is about it for my Top 5 Multicolored cards in The Brother’s War. Do you agree or disagree with this rank? Let me know in the comment box below. I’d love to hear your take on this one.
