And so the Magic: the Gathering ban hammer had another casualty last night when Wizards of the Coast announced the banning of Omnath, Locus of Creation. The covered formats were Standard, Historic, and Brawl wherein this card was previously played legal and the metagame severely affected. With last weekend’s results on the Grand Finals Magic Arena tournament, it was quite ideal that the card should be banned. Along with last night’s casualties were Lucky Clover and Escape to the Wilds, two cards that were also defining the metagame of Standard. You can check the article on the announcement on this link.
As for the Standard metagame after this, we can expect a shift in the strategies of the other decks and may open a new approach. I’d expect again Mono-color based strategies to flourish while Ramp decks will still be a thing and might just stick with Temur or Simic colors. Adventures, well, would still be the same though powered down with the loss of the clover. We shall observe in the next couple of weeks how these Standard decks will turn out.
