A few days of empty blog posts has left me thinking of some possible topics while I get enough time to write our CONquest weekend experience. I finally found it today that I should continue with the Magic 2020 card spoiler posts and for this topic, I will have to discuss a few White reprint cards that in my memories of its uses back in its Standard first print days. To start with, we have the now most likely favorite instant card Gods Willing.
The card shined back in Theros Standard in particular with the Blue White Heroics deck. Heroic ability triggers every time the creature is targeted by your spell and mostly a +1/+1 counter pumped the creature aside from other effects like gaining Flying or First Strike. The deck can be very explosive with cantrip cards that triggers Heroic while Gods Willing protects them from spot removal or combat damage.
Its current Standard deck archetype which I see will truly fit is the Boros Feather deck. That deck is almost a carbon copy in terms of strategy but with a few significant advantages. Here is a decklist below.
Boros Feather – Justin Chin
1st, MCQ Barcelona @ Mana Base (Malaysia)
22 LANDS
2 Boros Guildgate
4 Clifftop Retreat
5 Mountain
7 Plains
4 Sacred Foundry
17 CREATURES
2 Adanto Vanguard
4 Dreadhorde Arcanist
4 Feather, the Redeemed
3 Legion Warboss
4 Tenth District Legionnaire
18 INSTANTS and SORC.
4 Defiant Strike
2 Integrity / Intervention
4 Reckless Rage
2 Samut’s Sprint
3 Sheltering Light
2 Shock
1 Thrash / Threat
3 OTHER SPELLS
1 Ajani, Adversary of Tyrants
2 Gideon Blackblade
The two cards I am referring to are Dreadhorde Arcanist and Feather, the Redeemed. Both creatures gain you card value with the instants you cast making it a powerful deck that can alpha strike opponents. With the addition of Gods Willing, this is not so far from reality.
The second White card reprint is Master Splicer.
The Scars of Mirrodin Standard saw pseudo-artifact decks that benefits on equipments, zero-cost creatures such as Memnite and artifacts. The splicers from the Phyrexian invaders were reprinted in various forms and abilities and the popular one of course is Blade Splicer. This one is one mana cost greater but you are having a 4/4 Golem instead. We have a few blink spells in the current Standard that can put additional value on this card but we can wish for the likes of Restoration Angel. Also, copy effects might be useful on this one.
Another deck strategy is to go with a Golem tribal build but I only recognize Meteor Golem as the other relevant card.
Lastly, we have the reprint of Rule of Law.
This is purely a sideboard card against Phoenix decks, unless you are planning to go old school with a Blue-White Counter all. It might be possible, yes, but you might also be ready to lose friends. Just kidding.
That is a wrap for today. Until the next blog post.
