Vampires in Magic Core Set 2020

The Vampires tribe is still prevalent in the current Standard metagame with the Ixalan set provided most of its card components. I think it is currently a Tier 2 aggro deck which mostly saw play in MTG Arena open/random matches.

Browsing through the Magic 2020 spoilers on Reddit, I noticed a few new Vampire creatures and particularly the newest planeswalker version of Sorin Markov with all three loyalty abilities benefiting on the tribe. Check out the three cards below:

Bloodthirsty Aerialist is Black’s Ajani’s Pridemate, one cost higher but with the bonus of Flying. With the lifelink Vampire tokens from the Legion’s Landing, it is easy to pump this critter on the curve. Another life gain source is this next preview card.

Vampire of the Dire Moon is probably Vampire Nighthawk’s little sister. A 1/1 for one ain’t that much but the Deathtouch to be able to trade with bigger threats and of course the life gain to support Vampire shenanigans. Sadly she is still vulnerable to the Chainwhirler effect.

Lastly, the new Sorin Vampire planeswalker. The casting cost is perfect for an aggro Vampire deck. You can curve from Adanto Vanguard into him, +1 the ability and all the benefits to the vanguard and swing for 4. This also gains you 4 life.

His second ability to lightning helix your opponents’ creatures at a cost of one creature seem valid as Vampires as willing to sacrifice for a greater good. The third one, while there might not be a Vampire that is huge enough to be cheated into the battlefield on turn three, is still a way to expand your board position or to put up a blocker to protect Sorin. I have also read on a certain combo where you can place Emrakul on turn three via that Blue enchantment which I forgot the name.

Anyhow, I am seeing Sorin as a staple walker in Orzhov Knights or Vampires deck or maybe on a Mardu version of the archetype build.

That is about for the Vampires in Magic Core Set 2020, there might be a part two on this topic once the spoilers reveal new Vampire cards.

Until the next blog post.
