GRN Standard Deck: 5C Lantern Control

Seeing the reprint of Chromatic Lantern brought my memories during the RTR days when a five-color deck was made in Standard. I have decided to create this version again with Guilds of Ravnica and the components from the set that could make its proper use.

Here below is a decklist:

Creatures
4 Chamber Sentry
3 Dryad Greenseeker
1 Niv-Mizzet, Parun

Spells
4 Assassin’s Trophy
2 Cleansing Nova
3 Chemister’s Insight
3 Chromatic Lantern
1 Disdainful Stroke
3 Gift of Paradise
2 Sinister Sabotage
1 Negate
2 Vraska’s Contempt

Planeswalkers
1 Karn, Scion of Urza
1 Ral, Caller of Storms
4 Teferi, Hero of Dominaria

Lands
4 Overgrown Tomb
4 Hinterland Harbor
3 Temple Garden
3 Watery Grave
3 Rootbound Crag
2 Dragonskull Summit
1 Forest
2 Island
1 Mountain
1 Plains
1 Swamp

The Creatures:

Dryad Greenseeker – this two drop that can get you to draw your lands and filter each turn. It also acts as a speed bump to pesky 1/1s and 2/1s.

Chamber Sentry – With the access to five colors, this will at max 5/5 on turn five or earlier with the help of the lantern to ramp up your mana. It may not deal damage right away but its long game plan of recursion is maybe just too hard for the opponent to handle.

Niv-Mizzet, Parun – Every control deck should have its mascot and I have chosen this Dragon Wizard because of it is a solid 5/5 flyer, cannot be countered and can ping the lethal damage in the late game.

The Spot Removals – Ass Trophy and Contempt are probably the most solid spot kills in the current metagame, and the former should live up the hype of dealing with almost anything in the format.

The Counterspells – Sinister Sabotage, Disdainful Stroke, and Negate are pretty basic for a control deck and would only deal with relevant spells that may affect your gameplan. At times you can pseudo-tapped out for a Teferi with one of these cards in your hand.

The Mana Ramp – Chromatic Lantern, and Gift of Paradise – gift is already known in the Turbo Fog deck prior the rotation and for this build it will not only benefit of fixing your mana but also function the same way with Teferi as your follow up play.

The Planeswalkers – Teferi, Hero of Dominaria is of course the star player in the mid to long game and he is backed up by Karn and Ral Zarek. I would really like to try this planeswalker deck version of Ral over the cheaper version in the set maybe because of its -2 ability that is a fixed damage. I might be wrong though.

The Land Distribution – Using deckstats website to analyze the mana distribution, I have found that Blue and Green are the top two mostly used color followed by White and Black. I made sure that Harbor and the Tomb are the starting lands and can satisfy the conditions of the Crag and Summit. I have also added at least one copy of the basic land just in case opponents also use Assassin’s Trophy to deal with our threats.

The possible sideboard cards are listed below and I just made sure to be straightforward in the plan as the access to any of the five colors is possible:

2 Deafening Clarion
2 Disdainful Stroke
1 Doomfall
1 Negate
4 Knight of Autumn
4 Thought Erasure
1 The Eldest Reborn

Let me know what you think of this list. I might not have explained it well and I’d love to hear your suggestions. Hit me up on the comment box below.
