We continue to explore potential deck archetypes as M14 hits Standard by Friday next week. Last weekend’s prerelease event in Bacolod got me to explore in actual some of the cards in the set. I’ve recognized that Corrupt has been reprinted again so it sparked me an idea of a possible comeback of Mono Black Control.

Since there is already an existing similar deck in the form of Golgari Control, it was just easy for me to come up with a list and added M14 cards. Here is what I’ve come up with:

The rest of the card choices are pretty much typical choices while the new cards added were Ratchet Bomb, Corrupt, Nightmare, and reprinted into uncommon Doom Blade.

I’ve chosen Curse of Death’s Hold into the main against the popular Junk Aristocrats and other Lingering Soul shenanigans, and also unintentionally work well with Staff of Nim on killing 2/2s.

Desecration Demon is the main finisher of the deck providing huge damage or giving you free kills of its combat trigger ability. It can even survive an early Mutilate in case the opponent’s board gets cluttered.

Nightmare is just nostalgic for most players and I even played it when MBC was popular way back 2003. I’m pretty sure it deserved a slot in this list.

I’ll try building this deck for next week’s FNM or so. Sideboard plan has not yet been decided but it would just be easy peasy. Hopefully I can dig up the old cards from my stash.
