Stomping Back in Standard

The Standard metagame is changing again as Dragon’s Maze enters the fray of the format. New archetypes might again appear or at least improve the current popular decks. The one I am looking to discuss today is a deck that has been short-timed recognized in Standard. This deck is somewhat related to what Brian Kibler has been piloting before.

Here is the list, in post Dragon’s Maze Standard:

Lands
12 Forest
2 Kessig Wolf Run
4 Rootbound Crag
4 Stomping Ground

Creatures
3 Wandering Wolf
2 Wolfir Avenger
4 Wolfir Silverheart
3 Yeva, Nature’s Herald
4 Arbor Elf
4 Strangleroot Geist
3 Wolfbitten Captive
3 Predator Ooze

Spells
2 Flesh/Blood
1 Garruk, Primal Hunter
4 Rancor
3 Ranger’s Guile
2 Revenge of the Hunted

This deck is basically about Rancor-ing your dudes and attack, but has a few tricks in hand. First of is Yeva. It makes you play your critters at instant speed, making it difficult for opponents to track combat plans.

Next is Wandering Wolf. I am sure you’ll say wtf, but this dog err wolf has potential. Rancor is its basic partner, while Silverheart is your other option. Plus those annoying Spirit tokens from Aristocrats decks can chump this wolf.

Wolfbitten Captive is another good one-drop that can trump the current 2/2s of Standard. Flipping it into Werewolf form makes it more a threat against other 3/3s in the meta.

Ranger’s Guile is now maindecked as protection against Tragic slips, Searing Spears and the like.

The new inclusion from DGM is the rare split card Flesh/Blood. The other half sorcery, Blood, profits well with all of the pump spells and effects of the deck, and works as a removal and finisher.

What other cards you think that might fit well in the deck? Inform me via the comment box below.

Until next post.
