June 15 Dominaria Draft Recap

Last Friday was recently declared as a holiday nationwide in commemoration of Eid al-Fitr for the Muslims so the community decided to hold a Dominaria booster draft. The sponsored store was Nth Dimension as they still have a lot of booster products at that time. I placed the announcement Monday of that week on the MTG Iloilo Facebook group and listed those who committed to participate in the draft.

By Thursday, there were six players already but we were still lacking two to complete the eight. I then contacted Oliver which is not a fan of FB if he would like to play and he gladly said yes. The list was then filled with Franco as the last player to add, but by the next day, JP Chua opted to cancel his slot at the last minute. Good thing our friend Gus was also willing to play so we just instructed him to drop by the store.

The draft started around 40 minutes past the intended time of 2 pm. Nevertheless, it was a complete eight players eagerly waiting to draft and open the best cards in the set. I was the TO so I oversee the draft with the proper time and format. there were a lot of chuckles and awe as I saw some of the relevant mythics that they were able to open. Did I say Karn and Teferi? We just listed each of the rares and mythics opened so as to avoid swapping and cheating.

What followed was a 50-minute deck building which they just consumed in just 40 minutes. I then announced the pairing for Round 1 and they were off to the matches. I observed that there were not much of a rules question as I assumed that these wasers were already familiar with the set’s mechanics.

After 3 Rounds of Swiss, the final ranking for the Top 4 players was:
1st, Franco (Red Black with Green)
2nd, Oliver (Blue Red Wizards)
3rd, Ian (White Blue)
4th, Dave (Green White)

Here is a glimpse of the opened rares and mythics after collecting them from the players.

It was an awesome box that contained these three on-demand cards in the set. The Top 3 will surely get the best mythics in this order: Karn, Teferi, and Lyra.

Overall, it was a win-win scenario both for me as TO and the players. I get to officiate a booster draft with little to no issues and they get to open the high-value cards of Dominaria. I am hoping the same experience again with the upcoming Core Set 2019.

That is about for this report. Until the next post.
