The current Magic: the Gathering Standard deck setup for the midrange decks in the format goes with having early utility creatures which can later, ramp the deck into its big spells. For control matchups, it can outrace them in mana by casting their best Planeswalkers early on. Not to mention that they can also deal cheap damage if left unchecked.
